Writing argumentative essays in English for preparation to the written part of international examinations

Abstract

В настоящее время изучение английского языка становится всё более актуальным. Все больше и больше обучающихся готовятся к сдаче международных экзаменов, чтобы получить сертификат, подтверждающий их уровень владения английским языком. Один из самых популярных экзаменов, который сдают обучающиеся, это IELTS. В данной работе сделан акцент именно на второй части раздела «письмо», где испытуемым предлагается написать аргументативное эссе различных типов (за и против, мнение, решение проблемы). Цель исследования была рассмотреть требования к написанию эссе, предполагаемые разработчиками экзамена. На основании изучения этих требований, была составлена таблица критериев оценки для анализа трех типов аргументированного эссе. В практической части работы. Проанализированы различные эссе, написанные тестируемыми, и делается вывод, в какой мере они соответствуют требованиям и критериям оценки. В работе использовались следующие методы исследования: описательно-аналитический, классификационный, метод компонетного и сравнительно-сопоставительного анализа, метод количественного анализа.

Nowadays studying English is getting more and more important, that is why more and more students get prepared and take their international exams to get certificate demonstrating their level of English. One of the most popular exam for students to take is IELTS. In this paper we focus on the second part of the written section of the exam when students are supposed to write an argumentative essay of different types (for and against, opinion, solving problem). The main objective of this research is to consider all the requirements which are supposed to be met to follow test developers’ instructions. Based on the analysis we make a table of assessment criteria for the three types of argumentative essay and taking them into account analyze different papers written by IELTS test takers and make conclusion to what extent they meet the requirements and assessment criteria. In order to carry out the study and solve the mentioned tasks, the following methods were used: Descriptive analysis, comparative analysis, classification method, method of quantitative analysis.
