Transformations as a means of preserving cultural and historical peculiarities of the original text in translation: Evidence from Mikhail Sholokhov's novel "And Quiet Flows the Don"

Abstract

Данная работа посвящена исследованию основных переводческих трансформаций и способов перевода безэквивалентной лексики на материале романа М. А. Шолохова «Тихий Дон». В ходе работы были выявлены различные подходы к пониманию таких основополагающих понятий, как «эквивалентность» и «адекватность» перевода, «безэквивалентная лексика», изучены теоретические аспекты проблемы передачи авторского стиля в переводе, обобщены подходы к переводу безэквивалентной лексики. Особое место уделено переводческим трансформациям и способам перевода безэквивалентной лексики на материале художественного произведения. В ходе исследования был собран корпус примеров методом сплошной выборки, который составил 203 культурно-маркированные единицы. Для изучения отобранных примеров были применены сравнительно-сопоставительный анализ и метод математических подсчетов. На примере романа был сделан вывод о том, что любое произведение, которое содержит культурно-маркированные единицы, при переводе неизбежно теряет свою оригинальность, самобытность и индивидуальность.

The bachelor thesis is devoted to analysis of major transformations of culture-specific vocabulary based on the novel by M. Sholokhov “Tikhiy Don”. The work deals with different approaches to such basic concepts as “equivalence” and “adequacy” of translation, “culture-specific vocabulary”. Theoretical aspects of how to transfer the author’s style in translation were studied, and important approaches to the translation of culture-specific vocabulary were examined. Much attention is given to different transformations and ways of translating of such words with no direct equivalents in other languages. In the course of the study, a body of examples was collected using the method of continuous sampling, which amounted 203 culture-bound words. To study the selected examples, the comparative analysis and the method of mathematical calculations were applied. Using the novel as an example, it was carried out that any piece of art that contains culturally-labeled units inevitably loses its originality in the translation.
