Framing in public and political discourse as illustrated by the debates around the United Kingdom European Union membership referendum

Abstract

В данной работе рассматривается роль фреймов и фрейминга в общественно-политическом дискурсе на примере дебатов вокруг референдума о выходе Великобритании из ЕС. Область настоящего исследования охватывает когнитивную лингвистику, социальную психологию, теорию общественных движений и интерпретативный политический анализ. Объект исследования составляют фрагменты выступлений политических и общественных деятелей во время публичных дебатов вокруг выхода Великобритании из ЕС. Методы, использованные в данной работе, включают фрейм-анализ и лексико-семантический анализ. В теоретической части данной работы, опираясь, в частности, на работы Ч. Филлмора («Фрейм и семантика понимания», 1985) и И. Гофмана («Анализ фреймов: Эссе об организации повседневного опыта», 1974), мы рассматриваем различные трактовки таких понятий, как «фрейм» и «фрейм-анализ». В практической части нами предпринят анализ использования фреймов в общественно-политической сфере на материале дебатов вокруг референдума о выходе Великобритании из ЕС, а также сделан ряд выводов по результатам анализа.

This study examines the role of frames and framing in the public political discourse in the context of debates around the United Kingdom European Union membership referendum. The scope of the study includes cognitive linguistics, social psychology, theory of social movements and interpretative policy analysis. The object of the study is to analyze fragments of speeches by public political figures in the course of the debates around the UK’s withdrawal from the EU. The methods used in the study include frame analysis and lexico-semantic analysis. In the theoretical part of the study, based on the work of Charles Fillmore (“Frames and the Semantics of Understanding”, 1985) and Erving Goffman (“Frame Analysis: An Essay on the Organization of Experience”, 1974), we explore different theories behind such concepts as “frame” and “frame analysis”. In the practical part, we conduct an analysis of the use of frames in the sphere of public politics, using the example of the debates around the United Kingdom European Union membership referendum. We also draw a number of conclusions based on the results of our analysis.
