The syntax of Russian diplomatic documents of the late 18th – early 19th centuries in comparison with French documents: A case study of bilingual treaties in Russian and French

Abstract

В исследовании рассматриваются особенности синтаксиса международных договоров как жанра дипломатических документов на материале двуязычных договоров между Российской империей с иностранными державами в конце XVIII – начала XIX века (на русском и французском языках). Статус французского языка как lingua franca в дипломатической коммуникации (в XVIII – XIX вв.) привел к появлению в русском языке терминов, отражающих понятие французской дипломатии. Лексические заимствования из французского языка привели к синтаксической интерференции в русской речи, употребление лексических и грамматических калек повлияло на порядок слов в русском предложении. В работе были определены факты синтаксического калькирования и его виды. Был проведен сопоставительный лингвистический анализ распространенных типов сложных структур в рамках изучаемых договоров на русском и французском языках.

The paper analyses the syntactic characteristics of international treaties as a genre of diplomatic documents on the basis of bilingual treaties between the Russian Empire and foreign powers in the late 18th – early 19th century (in Russian and French). The status of French as a lingua franca in diplomatic discourse (in the 18th – 19th century) resulted in the acquisition in the Russian language of terms reflecting the concept of French diplomacy. Lexical borrowings from the French led to syntactic interference in Russian written language; as illustrated in the paper, the use of lexical and grammatical calques affected the word order in Russian sentences. The paper presents the use and types of syntactic calques through a comparative analysis of common types of complex structures within the framework of the analysed treaties in Russian and French.
