Kick the Bucket: The idiom in dictionaries and in the corpora - the problem of the definition

Abstract

Данная работа посвящена сопоставительному анализу дефиниций идиомы kick the bucket в словарях, её трактовкам в теоретических работах по фразеологии, а также контекстов, в которых данное словосочетание зафиксировано в электронных корпусах. В работе описывается семантика входящей в состав идиомы лексемы bucket и её иносказательный потенциал. На основании анализа внутренней формы и контекстов употребления идиомы kick the bucket даётся критическая оценка трактовке идиомы в словарях и теоретических источниках, а также делается вывод об иносказательно-оценочной природе данной идиомы.

The paper analyses selected contexts of the idiom kick the bucket from online corpora and discusses its representation in dictionary definitions and theoretical works on phraseology. The analysis is based on highlighting the expressive potential of the lexeme bucket (the important constituent of the idiom) and its figurative usage. The data allows to challenge the traditional interpretation of this idiom in dictionaries and theoretical works, and to draw a conclusion about the figurative and evaluative nature of this idiom.
