Exploring the translation of metaphors in medical discourse: Evidence from the English-Russian translation of "HOUSE M.D.", an American television drama

Abstract

В настоящей работе рассматриваются особенности использования и перевода метафор в устном медицинском дискурсе современных телесериалов. Область данного исследования охватывает лингвостилистику, когнитивную лингвистику, общую теорию перевода и киноперевод. Предметом исследования выступает перевод концептуальных и креативных метафор в медицинском дискурсе на примере американской медицинской драмы House M.D. (2004-2012 гг.). Материалом для исследования являются первые три сезона телесериала (70 эпизодов соответственно, 2004-2006 гг.). В теоретической части настоящей работы рассматривается понятие стилистики английского языка, стилистических особенностей языка современных англоязычных телесериалов, в особенности жанра медицинской драмы. Приведена подробная классификация основных теорий метафор в отечественной и зарубежной лингвистике, где особое внимание уделяется теории концептуальной метафоры Дж. Лакоффа и М. Джонсона и такому явлению, как креативные, или авторские метафоры. Рассмотрены основные подходы к переводу метафор в рамках теории перевода, а также выявлены особенности трех видов киноперевода. В практической части предпринят анализ использования и перевода на русский язык концептуальных и креативных метафор с учетом особенностей закадрового вида киноперевода. На основе проведенного анализа выполнены статистические подсчеты частотности применения переводческих приемов и их соотношения и сделан ряд выводов.

The present dissertation discusses the peculiarities of the use and the translation of metaphors in colloquial medical discourse in contemporary television series. The field of study encompasses literary stylistics, cognitive linguistics, general translation studies and film translation. The subject of the present study is the translation of the conceptual and creative metaphors in medical discourse based on the examples culled from the American medical drama House M.D. In the theoretical section of the present study, the notion of style in functional stylistics is explored, as well as the stylistic aspects of the language of the contemporary television series with reference to the genre of medical drama. The study presents an exemplified outline of various types of metaphors, whereas attention is mainly paid to G. Lakoff and M. Johnson’s Conceptual Metaphor Theory (CMT) and the use of creative metaphors in the characters’ speech. The theoretical framework also relies on a number of certain approaches to the translation of metaphors from both cognitive and linguistic perspectives. In addition, the study provides an overview of three major types of audiovisual translation. The second section of the dissertation is devoted to the analysis of the English-Russian translation of cognitive and creative metaphors with regard to the voice-over translation technique. On the basis of the above analysis, the quantitative data on the frequency of translation strategies used is illustrated in the pie charts.
