The motif structure of Mikhail Bulgakov's short novel "Diaboliad"

Abstract

М. А. Булгаков – один из важнейших авторов в русской литературе XX века, его произведениям посвящено множество научных исследований. Первая повесть писателя, «Дьяволиада», считается исследователями отправной точкой в создании романа «Мастер и Маргарита», при этом она до сих пор в известной степени обойдена вниманием в научных кругах. Наша диссертация посвящена проблемам мотивной структуры повести М. А. Булгакова «Дьяволиада». В диссертации предлагается анализ ряда мотивов повести, связанных с гностической традицией. Проведённые наблюдения над структурой произведения позволяют открыть новые аспекты понимания авторской философской позиции.

M. A. Bulgakov is one of the most famous and important writers of Russian literature of the twentieth century, which works had become a subject for a lot of scientific researches. The first short novel “Diaboliad” is considered to be the cornerstone of the final novel "Master and Margarita", but it has not been sufficiently studied yet. Our thesis is devoted to the problem of the motif structure of Bulgakov's story "Diaboliad". The thesis suggests the analysis of a number of story’s motives connected with the Gnostic tradition. Observations over the motif structure of the story allow us to find a new perspective in the understanding of the author's philosophical position.
