An impact of Virtual Learning Environments on communication process between students and instructors

Abstract

Аннотация к ВКР. Тема ВКР "Влияние виртуальных обучающий сред на процесс коммуникации между студентами и преподавателями". Объектом исследования являются виртуальные образовательные системы. Субъектом исследования является коммуникация в образовательном процессе в виртуальных образовательных средах и виртуальных информационных системах. Для создания основания для сравнения был использован метод кейс-стади. В данном исследование кейсами являются: Уорикский Университет (Великобритания) и СПбГУ. Главная цель данного исследования- провести анализ коммуникационных практик между студентами и преподавателями в виртуальных образовательных средах в СПбГУ и Уорикском университете. Для того чтобы выполнить данную цель, было поставлено несколько задач, среди которых: выявить, существует ли разница между коммуникационными практиками СПбГУ и Уорвика и описать коммуникационные барьеры в ВОС в СПбГУ и Уорвике. Для выполнения данных задач использовался качественный и количественный анализ: онлайн-опрос и интервью. Общее количество страниц ВКР - 68. ВКР состоит из двух глав, теоретической и эмпирической, 3 таблица, 6 графиков, 2 картинок, библиографии, которая включает 22 источника. Первая глава включает теоретическое обоснование вопроса, коммуникационных процессов в ВОС. Вторая глава проводит глубинный анализ существующих систем СПбГУ и Уорвика, а именно BlackBoard и Sakai. Актуальность данной проблемы обусловлена тем, что данный феномен является относительно новым для России и требуем большего понимания для создания стабильного поля для коммуникации и образовательного процесса в 21ом веке. ВОС пытаются применить многие современные университеты и каждый делает это по-разному, со своим собственным взглядом на то, как нужно использовать систему. Данная работа проводит критический сравнительный анализ, показывает некоторые ограничения и преимущества данных системы в двух сильно отличающихся университетах, а также чувства и мысли студентов по поводу работающих ВОС и позицию преподавателя. Результаты данной работы могут помочь улучшить коммуникационные аспекты ВОС в соответствии с желанием пользователей и особенностями места, а это, в свою очередь, создаст лучшую сеть для организации всего процесса обучения.

Annotation to the MA thesis, MA topic: “An impact of Virtual Learning Environments on communication process between students and instructors”. Object of this research is Virtual Learning Environments. Subject of the research is a communication in a learning process inside the VLE and VIS. To create a ground for a comparison case study method was used. In this research: those are University of Warwick (UK) and Saint-Petersburg State University (Russia) cases. The main aim of this research is to analyze communication practices between students and instructors in Virtual Learning Environments in Saint-Petersburg State University and the University of Warwick. To reach this aim several tasks were completed, such as to examine if there are differences in communication practices at SPSU and Warwick and to reveal and describe barriers of communication in VLE at SPSU and Warwick University. In order to complete these tasks, following qualitative and quantitative methods were used: Online survey and Semi-Structured Interview. Total amount of pages in the thesis – 68 (12 font size, 1.5 space). It consists of 2 chapters, theoretical and empirical, 3 tables, 6 graphs, 2 pictures, bibliography which includes 22 sources and 3 appendixes (questionnaire for survey, interview guide and misc. materials). First chapter includes theoretical framework for studying an impact of VLE on communications in a learning process, provides general overview of VLE, analysis it as a new medium of communication and shows recent research findings related to the communication in Virtual Learning Environments. Second chapter provides a deeper look into the current systems at SPSU and the University of Warwick, namely BlackBoard and Sakai. Explains chosen cases, describes them and most importantly, it shows the results of empirical research. The topicality of this problem is that this is a relatively new phenomenon in Russia and needs a deeper understanding for a creation of stable communication and learning process in 21st century. VLE is something that every modern university tries to apply, but each of them uses it differently, with their own views on how should the process be organized. Trying to analyze factors which may affect communication and other actions between students and instructors in VLE, this paper provides a critical comparative analysis, shows the limitations and advantages of these systems in two different universities, students’ thoughts on these systems and a position of an instructor in VLE. The results of this research may help to improve the communication aspects in VLE accordingly to the needs of users and specifics of place and this, respectively, will create a better network for organizing the whole process of learning.
