The construction of collective identity in the Russian Cossack communities: Evidence from Astrakhan and St. Petersburg

Abstract

В данном дипломном проекте рассматриваются особенности формирования коллективной идентичности казаков, находящихся на территориях их неисторического проживания, какими являются г. Астрахань и Санкт-Петербург. Выбор темы обусловлен интересом к процессу возрождения казачества, возвращению его в социокультурное пространство спустя несколько десятилетий, а также вопросу о том, как оно проявляет себя сегодня на постсоветском пространстве. Методами исследования стали наблюдение и интервью. Целью работы стало выявление оснований для объединения современных казаков и анализ их повседневных практик. Объект исследования - казачьи общества в современной России. Предмет исследования - конструирование коллективной идентичности.

The graduation paper deals with the construction of the collective identity in the Russian cossacks' communities which are located on the territories of their non-historical residences. The choice of the issue is due to the general interest to the process of Cossacks' revival as well as the question of how it manifests itself nowadays in the post-soviet time, after its exclusion from the social space. The aim of the onvestigation is to identify the reasons for unification of modern Cossacks through the analysis of their regular acrivities and rites. The object os the Cossacks' communities. The subject is the construction of collective identity. Research methods are interviewing and observation.
