Modes of expressing the linguistic category of indefiniteness in English translations of Anton Chekhov's prose

Abstract

Данная выпускная квалификационная работа посвящена сопоставительному анализу выражения функционально-семантической категории неопределённости в рассказах А. П. Чехова и их переводах на английский язык. В работе рассматриваются способы выражения категории неопределённости в русском языке, способы их перевода на английский язык и причины вариативности перевода. В результате проведённого исследования было определено, что на выбор варианта перевода влияют состав средств выражения неопределённости в ИЯ и ПЯ, структурные особенности языков, а также принадлежность к тому или иному ФС микрополю неопределённости и семантические особенности контекста. Также анализ показал, что в каждом из текстов есть доминантное ФС микрополе неопределённости, влияющее на степень асимметрии средств выражения в оригинале и переводе.

The thesis is devoted to a comparative analysis of the functional-semantic category of indefiniteness in short stories of A.P. Chekhov and their translations into English. The work deals with issues related to the modes of expression of the category of indefiniteness in Russian, their translation into English and the reasons for the variability of translation. As a result of the study, it was determined that the choice of the mode of translation of indefiniteness depends on the means available to the source and target languages, their structure, and the functional-semantic micro-field to which they belong, as well as semantic features of the context. The analysis also showed that in each of the texts there is a dominant functional-semantic micro-field, which affects the degree of asymmetry in the means of expression in the source and target texts.
