Китай активно использует политику «мягкой силы» в своей внешней политике, тем самым создавая представление о себе как о миролюбивой и дружественной державе. Подобная организация своей политики была присуща Китаю задолго до появления самого термина «мягкой силы» и соответственно концепции. В силу специфики своей культуры и менталитета Китай всегда придерживался тенденции выстраивания добрососедских отношений с другими государствами, позиционируя себя при этом в качестве великой державы. На сегодняшний день, Китай продолжает выступать с такими политическими инициативами как «добрососедская дипломатия» Одним из механизмов углубления межкультурной коммуникации являются Перекрестные года. Российско-китайский опыт в проведении таких мероприятий продемонстрирован на экране. В рамках перекрестных годов страны демонстрируют достижения национальной культуры, искусства, медиа, литературой и т. д., взаимно обогащаются. Всё это способствует не только созданию положительных представлений друг о друге, но и помогает странам сблизиться и наладить контакты. Безусловным преимуществом подобной политики является то, что взаимодействие между странами происходит не только на правительственном уровне, но и среди населения. Еще одним важный инструментом при осуществлении политики «мягкой силы» выступает СМИ. Они влияя на формирование общественного мнения и создавая определенные образы. Влияние СМИ на обмен между странами является двухсторонним. Они могут передавать как правдивую позитивную информацию широкой аудитории, так способны дать аудитории и нездоровую искаженную информацию. Традиционные СМИ играют значительную роль в китайско-российских взаимоотношениях, можно отметить русскоязычный сайт газеты «Жэньминь жибао » и первое российское электронное СМИ на китайском языке «Эсиньван», а также запуск телеканала «Катюша» на территории Китая в 2017 году в рамках российско-китайского сотрудничества в сфере СМИ, а также проведение совместных мероприятий, например, в 2009 году в рамках «языковых годов» «Жэньминь жибао» и РИА Новости провели совместный конкурс на знание русского языка. Усилия российских и китайских СМИ во многом способствует укреплению «дружбы народов».
