Formation of new beauty ideals in US culture.: A case study of the body positivism movement and its lexical realization

Abstract

Данная работа посвящена проблеме лексической репрезентации концепта "бодипозитивизм". Бодипозитивизм — это движение или субкультура, согласно которой человек любого размера и веса считается красивым. Цель работы — исследовать, как прилагательные, связанные с описанием полного тела, реализуют свои коннотации при описании человеческой фигуры. Это поможет узнать, изменились ли значения слов после возникновения движения бодипозитивизма. Поскольку положительное отношение к телу зародилось в США, материалом для изучения служат американские статьи, посвящённые бодипозитиву. Поскольку данная проблема находится на пересечении культурологии и лексикологии, в теоретической главе будет изложена историческая сторона вопроса. В каждую эпоху существовали свои идеалы красоты, которые формировались согласно требованиями тех времён. Так, например, в Древней Греции ценилось атлетичное телосложение, поскольку был широко распространён спорт, в Средние века идеалом считалось измученное тело Христа и так далее. Однако бодипозитивизм не предусматривает наличие идеального типа тела, поскольку его основная идея заключается в том, что тело каждого человека являет собой идеал. В практической части работы будет рассмотрено, как изменились прилагательные, используемые для описания комплекции. Для этого будут использованы три словаря (Oxford Dictionary, Cambridge Dictionary, Dictionary of Merriam-Webster) и статьи, написанные бодипозитив-активистами. Сначала будет дано словарное значение прилагательного, поскольку значения от словаря к словарю могут меняться. Следующий шаг — изучить контексты, в которых используются выбранные адъективы, и сделать выводы, имеют они положительное, нейтральное или негативное значение. Так, слово "fat" является одним из самых ярких примеров. Изначально это слово имело только негативную коннотацию, которая вызывала ассоциации с ленью и распущенностью. Однако благодаря бодипозитивизму это слово было переосмысленно, и сейчас оно имеет нейтральное значение и используется для описания комплекции. Таким образом, как мы видим из теоретической части, идеалы красоты имеют модель развития в форме спирали, но бодипозитив можно назвать новым витком в этой спирали. В результате этого положительный образ тела вызывает некоторые изменения в языке, поскольку культура и язык взаимосвязаны.

The dissertation is concerned with the topic of lexical representation of concept ‘body positivity’ or so-called ‘positive body image’. Body positivity is a movement or subculture which empowers a human despite their size or weight. Lately it also started to advocate the acceptance of physical disabilities or unique features. The aim of the paper is to explore how the words’, connected with the word ‘fat’, actualize their connotation when a person is about to describe anyone’s figure. After doing it, we are going to find out if any of these adjectives has changed their meaning after the movement of body positivity occurred. As positive body image originated in the USA, the material is American articles, dedicated to this subculture. The dissertation consists of two chapters – theoretical and practical. Both of these chapters are divided into subchapters. As this topic is at the interface between science of culture and lexicology, in the theoretical part of dissertation there is a historical background of the main matter. There are some examples of beauty ideals throughout time and reasoning for that, like in Ancient Greece people appreciated athletic type of figure as sports were widely spread, in the Middle Ages Jesus’s body type was a standard, so people were starving on purpose, and so on, and so forth. On the contrary, body positivity does not seek for any ideal, as they hold views that every person’s figure is an ideal itself. Practical chapter is aimed at finding out how adjectives, which are frequently used to describe one’s body type, has changed. Sources for that are three dictionaries (Oxford Dictionary, Cambridge Dictionary, Dictionary of Merriam-Webster) and some articles written by body positivity activists. First of all, we should make clear what the dictionary meaning of the adjective is because meanings may differ from dictionary to dictionary. A further step is to study contexts in which these adjectives are used and make conclusions if they have positive, neutral or negative meaning. As an example the word ‘fat’ is one of the brightest. Long time ago it caused purely negative connotations like someone is fat because they are lazy and like eating. However, thanks to body positivity this word was reclaimed. Now it has a neutral meaning and is just a normal type of figure. The main difficulty and problem is that, unfortunately, it is impossible to know what all these adjectives literally meant a dozen centuries ago or what adjectives were used to describe a beautiful body. To sum up, as we can see from the theoretical part beauty ideals develop and change in a spiral way, but now body positivity can be called a new turn in this spiral. As a result, positive body image causes some changes in the language, as they are conncted.
