Pragmatic functions of rhetorical questions in different types of English discourse

Abstract

Основная цель данного исследования заключалась в выявлении особенностей реализации прагматического потенциала риторического вопроса в политическом, судебном и научно - популярном дискурсах. В ходе исследования были собраны и проанализированы примеры употребления риторических вопросов на материале англоязычных текстов. Разнообразие материала позволяет судить о достоверности выявленной информации. Опираясь на результаты анализа материала, а также на исследования в этой области, были определены и рассмотрены основные функции риторических вопросов в заявленных дискурсах, структурно-синтаксические особенности их употребления. Был сделан вывод о том, что основными функциями риторических вопросов являются экспрессивная функция, апеллятивная и функция воздействия. Исследование показало, что функции риторических вопросов соотносятся с прагматическими целями дискурса.

The main purpose of this study was to identify the features of the implementation of the pragmatic potential of the rhetorical question in political, judicial and popular science discourses. The study collected and analyzed examples of the use of rhetorical questions based on the material of English-language texts. The variety of the material allows us to judge the reliability of the identified information. Based on the results of the analysis of the material, as well as on research in this area, the main functions of rhetorical questions in the stated discourses, the structural and syntactic features of their use were identified and considered. It was concluded that the main functions of rhetorical questions are the expressive function, the appellative function and the speech influence. The study showed that the functions of rhetorical questions correlate with the pragmatic aims of the discourse.
