Lexico-stylistic characteristics of the comparative formula and its functioning: Evidence from the 12th century Old French epic poems and tales of chivalry

Abstract

Настоящая магистерская диссертация посвящена анализу лексико-стилистических особенностей компаративных формул. Особое внимание уделяется культурологическим особенностям эпохи Средневековья, в частности, месту символа в жизни и литературе средневековых людей, а также специфическим особенностям жанров, в которых используются сравнения, - эпической поэмы и рыцарского романа. В рамках исследования было рассмотрено грамматическое оформление компаративной формулы, сделаны выводы относительно общих закономерностей, а также отличий в синтаксическом построении сравнений, употребляемых в эпосе и в романах. Также было проанализировано лексическое наполнение компаративной формулы с учётом символического значения существительных, входящих в сравнение. Были сделаны выводы относительно зависимости грамматической структуры формулы и её лексического наполнения от жанра и от референта сравнения. Исследование показало, что компаративные формулы обладают схожей синтаксической структурой в эпосе и в романе. Рыцарский роман как жанр, появившийся позднее эпоса, заимствовал у него компаративную формулу в традиционной (фиксированной) форме, обогатив её за счёт авторского элемента. В ходе исследования было установлено, что вариативность формулы зависит от времени создания произведения, авторского стиля и от жанровой принадлежности произведения.

This master's thesis is dedicated to the analysis of the lexical and stylistic features of comparative formulas. We pay special attention to the culturological features of the Middle Ages, particularly to the role of symbolism in the life and the literature of medieval people, as well as to the specific traits of genres where the comparatives are used (epic poems and romances). In this work we considered the grammatical form of the comparative formula, we made conclusions about the common regularities and also about the differences in the syntactical construction of the comparatives used in epic literature and in romances. We also examined the lexical content of the comparative formula, taking into consideration the symbolic meaning of the nouns used in the comparatives. We made conclusions about the dependence of the comparatives' grammatical structure and its lexical content on the genre and the subject and object compared. The research showed that the comparative formulas have a similar syntactical structure in both epic poems and romances. The romance as a genre appeared after epic literature had adopted the comparative formula in its traditional (fixed) form and enriched it due to the authorial element. In this study we established the fact that the variability of comparatives depends on the time when the text was written, on the author's style, and on the genre.
