Language dimorphy in the poetry of Kostas Montis

Abstract

В представленной дипломной работе мы рассмотрели творчество влиятельного кипрского поэта, писателя и драматурга Костаса Монтиса. К. Монтис был греком-киприотом, вся деятельность которого связана с его родным островом. Анализируя творчество поэта, нельзя не заметить языковой разницы, которую мы определяем как языковую диморфию. Наше исследование посвящено поиску триггеров, причин, заставивших поэта переключаться со стандартного греческого на кипрский диалект. Для анализа были выбраны два сборника стихов «Мгновения» (Στιγμές) и «Письма к матери» (Γράμματα στη Μητέρα). Наш выбор не случаен, эти сборники являются наиболее известными работами Монтиса. Для поэта кипрский диалект имеет статус равноценный статусу стандартного новогреческого языка. А употребление кипрского диалекта не обуславливается тематикой, а скорее связана с эмоциональной сферой поэта. Безусловно, причина доминирования стандартного новогреческого языка в творчестве Костаса Монтиса лежит не в том, что возможности диалекта ограничены, а скорее в том, что стандартный новогреческий язык более распространен и говорить о политике на нём можно с более широкой аудиторией.

In this graduation work, we have analyzed the poetry of the influential Cypriot poet, novelist, and playwright Costas Montis. C. Montis was a Greek-Cypriot, all his activities are connected with his native island Cyprus. Analyzing his poetry, it’s hard not to notice the linguistic difference, which we define as linguistic dimorphy. Our research is devoted to the search of triggers and the reasons that made the poet switch from the standard modern Greek language to the Cypriot dialect. Two collections of poems “Moments” (Στιγμές) and “Letters to Mother” (Γράμματα στη Μητέρα) have been selected for the analysis. This choice is not mere coincidence, but these collections are the most famous works of Montis. For the poet the Cypriot dialect has a status equivalent to the standard modern Greek language. And the use of the Cypriot dialect doesn’t depend on the theme, but rather is associated with the emotional sphere of the poet. Undoubtedly, the dominant position of the standard modern Greek language in the work of Costas Montis lies not in the fact that the dialect's possibilities are limited, but rather in the fact that the Greek language is more widespread and gives possibility to talk about the politics with the wider audience.
