Linguistic alignment at a syntactic level in confrontational communication on the Internet

Abstract

Настоящая работа посвящена выявлению и описанию природы языковой координации, изучению особенностей ее функционирования на уровне синтаксиса в рамках конфронтационного онлайн-общения представителей англоязычного социума. На основании проведенного исследования был сделан вывод о том, что крайне редки случаи, когда языковая координация реализуется только на синтаксическом уровне, обычно она сопровождается лексической координацией. Кроме того, были определены основные прагматические функции синтаксической координации в конфронтационном общении в онлайн-дискуссиях, ведущей из которых является функция смещения акцента в пользу своего мнения. Несмотря на распространенное среди исследователей мнение о том, что собеседники чаще всего координируют свои реплики неосознанно, результаты проведенного анализа дают основания полагать, что языковая координация может быть использована осознанно и преднамеренно.

The study focuses on the identification and description of the nature of linguistic alignment, the study of the features of its functioning at the level of syntax within the confrontational online communication of representatives of the English-speaking society. On the basis of the conducted research, it was concluded that linguistic alignment is rarely realised only at the syntactic level, usually it is accompanied by lexical alignment. In addition, the basic pragmatic functions of syntactic alignment in confrontational communication in online discussions were identified, the leading of which is the function of shifting the emphasis in favour of one's opinion. Despite the prevalent opinion among the researchers that the interlocutors most often coordinate their replicas unconsciously, the results of the analysis give grounds to believe that linguistic alignment can be used consciously and intentionally.
