Problems of regional integration in Latin America: A case study of MERCOSUR

Abstract

Данная работа посвящена проблемам международной экономической интеграции в Латинской Америке в период с 1980 г. по 2012 г. В ней рассмотрена предыстория экономической интеграции региона, развитие аргентино-бразильской интеграции, которая привела к становлению МЕРКОСУР, его развитие в начале XXI в., а также изучено влияние МЕРКОСУР на проект Зоны свободной торговли Америк и на УНАСУР. Выявлены основные факторы, негативно влияющие на международную экономическую интеграцию в Латинской Америке в целом, и в МЕРКОСУР в частности, среди которых: конфликты интересов среди участников объединения, слабость институтов интеграционных объединений, большая зависимость от непосредственной роли руководителей стран,большая разница в уровне развития стран региона.

This work is devoted to the problems of international economic integration in Latin America from 1980 to 2012. It examines the background of the region's economic integration, the development of the Argentine-Brazilian integration that led to the formation of MERCOSUR, its development at the beginning of the 21st century. The influence of MERCOSUR on the project of the Free Trade Zone of the Americas and on UNASUR was also studied. The main factors negatively influencing the international economic integration in Latin America in general, and in MERCOSUR in particular among those are: conflicts of interests among the members of the integration, weakness of the institutions of the integration associations, greater dependence on the direct role of the leaders of the countries, big difference in development levels of the countries in the region are revealed.
