Lexical and syntactic means of creating the image of Gervásio Vila-Nova as a prototype of Guilherme de Santa-Rita in the novel by Mário de Sá-Carneiro “Lucio’s confession”

Работа посвящена анализу лингвистических средств, использованных для создания образа Жервазиу Вила-Нова в романе «Исповедь Лусиу» Мариу де Са-Карнейру, одного из самых известных португальских писателей первой четверти ХХ века. Персонаж Жервазиу Вила-Нова представляет интерес для исследования, поскольку имеет реального прототипа в лице художника-модерниста Гильерме де Санта-Рита, cыгравшего важную роль в искусстве Португалии того периода. Сравнение литературного персонажа с реальным прототипом представляется интересным, поскольку позволяет лучше понять отношение автора к своему герою и соответственно к выдвигаемым им концепциям. Исследование проводится путем анализа как лексических и синтаксических средств, используемых автором при описании персонажа, так и авторской речи и диалогов героев. На основе полученных результатов описываются основные черты внешности, характера и поведения персонажа и проводится сравнение с его прототипом, основываясь на воспоминаниях самого Мариу де Са-Карнейру и его современников.

The research is dedicated to the analysis of the lexical and syntactic means used in order to create the image of Gervásio Vila-Nova in the novel «Lúcio’s confession» by Mário Sa-Carneiro, one of the most famous Portuguese writers of the first quarter of the XX century. The character of Gervásio Vila-Nova presents fascinating research opportunities because he had a real prototype – Portuguese modernist artist Guilherme de Santa-Rita, who played an important role in the Portuguese art of the period. Comparison of the literary character and the real person is interesting, because it helps to understand author’s vision of the character himself and concepts he promotes. The research is done through analysis of the lexical and syntactic means used by the author when describing the character, as well as dialogues of the characters. Based on the obtained results, the main features of the character's appearance, personality and behavior are described and compared with his prototype, using Marius de Sa Carneiro’s letters and his contemporaries’ memories as the evidence.
