The activity of the Yorkshire Dialect Society in promoting and maintaining the Yorkshire Dialect

Abstract

В настоящем исследовании рассматривается деятельность крупнейшего диалектологического общества, основанного в графстве Йоркшир (Великобритания), и его роли в поддержании и распространении йоркширского диалекта. На основе анализа ежегодных публикаций Transactions of the Yorkshire Dialect Society были выявлены и описаны основные виды деятельности Общества, а также изучены наиболее актуальные особенности грамматической системы, которые были выделены на материале текстов, написанных на диалекте. В настоящее время носители региональных диалектов стремятся сохранить свою национальную идентичность и культурное наследие, и диалект является одним из наиболее значимых компонентов в англоязычном обществе.

The aim of the research is to investigate and describe the types and nature of the activity of the Yorkshire Dialect Society (YDS) basing on the material of the annual publications of Transactions of the Yorkshire Dialect Society. These publications include prose and verses written in the Yorkshire dialect and they are grammatically analyzed in this work. Through its activity the YDS represents and preserves these features as part of national English language. The scientific relevance of the present study is ensured by the fact that any dialect is one of the major identity components for the English speaking community, and regional dialect speakers aim to keep it active.
