Commenting issues of Alexei Pisemsky’s novel “Troubled sea”: from historical realities to the text

Abstract

Роман А.Ф. Писемского «Взбаламученное море» впервые был опубликован в «Русском вестнике» в 1863 году. Почти все критики отозвались о нем отрицательно: одни обвинили писателя в тенденциозности; другие увидели в романе «беспристрастное воспроизведение действительности». Соотношение этих особенностей в романе можно рассмотреть, обратив внимание на то, как Писемский описывает прошлое в произведении. Обратившись к проблеме фикциональности, мы сравним текст «Взбаламученного моря» с другими публицистическими и художественными произведениями, а также с текстами дневников, мемуаров и писем. Это позволит нам определить особую стратегию репрезентации прошлого, которую представляет Писемский в своем романе.

A.F. Pisemsky’s novel «Troubled sea» was first published in «Russian Herald» in 1863. Almost all the critics reviewed it badly: some of them accused the writer of prepossession, the others saw «impartial reproduction of reality» in the novel. The correlation of this characteristics in the novel can be viewed by devoting attention to the way in which Pisemsky describes the past in the text. Addressing the issue of fictional in the novel, we will compare the «Troubled sea» with other publicistic and fictional works and also with diaries, memoirs and letters. This will allow us to identify that special strategy of representation of the past, which Pisemsky introduces in his novel.
