The translation of the examples of verbal communication in "Beowulf": aspects of historical pragmatics and translation studies (based on modern translations)

Abstract

Внутриязыковой перевод литературных памятников представляет особую сложность для лингвистов, так как традиции речевого общения на разных этапах развития языка существенно отличаются, а в эпосе «Беовульф» в обилии представлено речевое взаимодействие не только между автором и читателем, но и между персонажами. Изучив особенности речевого общения в древнеанглийском удалось выявить наиболее частые способы передачи нужной прагматики на современный английский язык.

Intralingual translation of the most influential works of literature is a serious challenge for linguists as verbal communication patterns presented in them change a lot through the history of the language. The "Beowulf" epic poem features verbal communication both between the characters and between the author and the audience. After looking closer into the specifics of verbal communication in Old English we were able to find the most common ways of expressing the necessary illocutionary force in modern English.
