The semantic field "harmony / гармония" in Modern English and Russian

Abstract

Выпускная квалификационная работа посвящена изучению семантических полей «harmony» и «гармония» в современном английском и русском языках соответственно. В работе рассматривается понятие семантического поля; описывается метод компонетного анализа; при помощи данного метода устанавливается, какие единицы входят в семантическое поле «harmony / гармония» в английском и русском языках; выявляется ядро и периферия данных полей. На основе анализа дефиниций 25 английских существительных из семантического поля «harmony», отобранных методом сплошной выборки из толковых словарей английского языках (Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English, MacMillan English Dictionary for Advanced Learners, Merriam-Webster Dictionary), и дефиниций 12 русских существительных из семантического поля «гармония», отобранных методом сплошной выборки из толковых словарей русского языка Т.Ф. Ефремовой, С.И. Ожегова, Д.Н. Ушакова, было выявлено, что в английское семантическое поле «harmony» входят слова, описывающие то, что люди мирно взаимодействуют; а в русском поле «гармония» основное значение слов – приятный звук. В целом, семантические поля «harmony» и «гармония» имеют мало общего.

The qualifying graduation work is devoted to the study of the semantic field "harmony" in modern English and Russian. In this paper, the concept of the semantic field is considered; the method of the component analysis is described. This method helps to establish the units included in the semantic field "harmony" in English and Russian; the core and the periphery of these fields are identified. There have been analyzed the definitions of 25 English nouns from the semantic field "harmony", selected from the Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English, MacMillan English Dictionary for Advanced Learners, and Merriam-Webster Dictionary), and the definitions of 12 Russian nouns from the semantic field "harmony", selected from the Russian language dictionaries by T.F. Efremova, S.I. Ozhegov, and D.N. Ushakov. The English semantic field "harmony" includes words describing peaceful people’s interaction; the basic meaning of the words of the Russian field "harmony" is a pleasant sound. In general, the semantic fields "harmony" in English and Russian have very little in common.
