Parentheses and expletives in Vladimir Makanin's "Captive of the Caucasus" and their English equivalents

Abstract

В работе исследованы функции вводных и вставных конструкций в прозе В. Маканина и его английских переводах. Материал анализируется в рамках субъектной организации текста. Два перевода, в целом, являются адекватными авторскому замыслу с точки зрения текстовой полифонии, за исключением случаев варьирования времен и типов модальности.

The thesis investigates the functions of parentheses and expletives in V. Makanin's prose and its English translations. The material is analysed from the standpoint of subjective sentence perspective. The two translations are shown to be largely adequate to the author's intention in terms of text polyphony, except for the cases of tense/time variation and modality types.
