The polysemy of the Presente dell Indicativo form and its translation into Russian

Abstract

Abstract della tesi magistrale di Aleksandr Naumochkin «IL PRESENTE DELL’INDICATIVO: POLIVALENZA E PROBLEMI DI TRADUZIONE IN RUSSO» Relatore: prof. S. Kokoshkina Correlatore: prof. N. Blokhina La presente tesi è incentrata sul problema di traduzione in lingua russa delle forme del Presente dell’Indicativo, focalizzandosi in particolare sulle tre opere della letteratura italiana contemporanea, tra le quali “Giro di vento” di Andrea De Carlo, “Ti prendo e ti porto via” di Niccolò Ammaniti e “Nessuno si salva da solo” di Margaret Mazzantini. L’obbiettivo della ricerca è individuare le funzioni ampliate del Presente dell'Indicativo e studiare i metodi della traduzione di questo tempo grammaticale in lingua russa in base alla comparazione di esempi presi dalla letteratura italiana contemporanea con le traduzioni corrispondenti. Il tema della tesi risulta essere di una particolare attualità nella situazione linguistica odierna. Come è noto, ogni tempo grammaticale ha lo scopo di svolgere una funzione specifica nella lingua ed è legato ad un concreto piano temporale. Così, il Presente dell'Indicativo viene tradizionalmente usato per presentare un evento come simultaneo rispetto al momento dell'enunciazione. In realtà lo strato temporale che copre il Presente risulta essere molto più ampio e in certi casi indica anche eventi passati o quelli che devono ancora accadere. Questo è dovuto al fatto che la lingua parlata contemporanea tende alla massima semplificazione grammaticale e alla deviazione dalle norme tradizionali. Gradualmente tutti i cambiamenti linguistici penetrano anche nella letteratura. Tuttavia, i fenomeni linguistici del genere non sempre possono trovare riscontro nella lingua in cui vengono tradotti i rispettivi testi italiani, nel nostro caso nella lingua russa. Il lavoro è suddiviso in due capitoli. Nel primo capitolo partendo dalle differenze tra la rilevanza e l’irrilevanza dei tempi verbali si sofferma sulla concordanza dei tempi nel piano del presente per studiare in che modo cambia la narrazione con l’uso del Presente come il tempo principale. Si concentra poi sull’analisi dettagliata delle caratteristiche funzionali del Presente dell’Indicativo in base alle grammatiche russe e italiane e si conclude con le posizioni principali della traduzione artistica. Il secondo capitolo propone un breve excursus nell’attività artistica degli autori selezionati per la ricerca e studia le caratteristiche fondamentali del linguaggio della letteratura italiana contemporanea. Si analizzano successivamente tutti i casi dell’uso del Presente nelle opere studiate e le scelte traduttive fatte per la trasposizione di queste forme verbali nelle versioni russe.

Blokhina Current master thesis is dedicated to the issue of translating into Russian of the forms of the Presente dell’Indicativo, focusing in particular on three contemporary Italian novels, such as “Giro di vento” by Andrea De Carlo, “Ti prendo e ti porto via” by Niccolò Ammaniti and “Nessuno si salva da solo” by Margaret Mazzantini. The aim of the research is to identify the expanded functions of the Presente dell’Indicativo and to study the methods of this verb tense translation into Russian on the basis of a comparison of examples taken from contemporary Italian literature with the corresponding translations. It is known that every verb tense performs a specific function in language and is associated with a specific time plan. The Presente dell’Indicativo traditionally refers to actions occurring simultaneously with the moment of speech. However, in effect the temporal layer of the Presente dell’Idicativo is much wider, and in certain situations it might also indicate future or past actions. It happens due to the tendency of modern spoken language to simplify grammatical structures, and gradually, these linguistic changes penetrate literature. As a result, more and more Italian authors choose the Presente dell’Indicativo as the main tense of the narrative. However, the problem of translation of this tendency into Russian and its adaptation to the Russian classical model of the narrative is still poorly studied. That is the main topicality of the research. The first thesis chapter, basing on information from the Italian and Russian grammars, identifies the main characteristics and uses of the Presente dell’Indicativo and highlights similarities and differences of this tense with the traditional narrative tenses in the Italian literature: Passato Remoto, Passato Prossimo and Imperfetto. It also presents the main features of literary translation and identifies two major concepts that are necessary for its existence: the adequacy and the equivalence. The second chapter focuses on the features of the language of the contemporary Italian literature with emphasis on the works of three writers whose writings were selected for the study: Andrea De Carlo, Niccolo Ammaniti and Margaret Mazzantini. The main part of the chapter is dedicated to the analysis of all cases of the use of the Presente dell’Indicativo in the studied works and methods of their translation into Russian. Current master thesis may be used as theoretical and practical base for learning Italian grammar as well as for research of the contemporary Italian literature and literary translation.
