Translation of Argentinian literature as illustrated by the translations of Adolfo Bioy Casares's works

Название моей выпускной квалификационной работы - «Особенности перевода литературы Аргентины на примере произведений Адольфо Биоя Касареса». Испанский язык — один из самых распространённых во всём мире, на нём говорят во множестве стран, в каждой из которых существует собственный вариант языка с его уникальными чертами. В моей работе речь идёт о характерных особенностях аргентинского варианта испанского и о переводе данного языкового варианта.

В теоретической части даётся обзор наиболее важных событий истории Аргентины, оказавших влияние на развитие культуры, литературы и на формирование языковых особенностей. Я касаюсь вопроса самого понятия национального варианта, его отличия от диалекта, опираясь на мнения исследователей-испанистов из разных стран, а также выдающихся политических деятелей и писателей Аргентины. Производится описание традиций страны, её жизненного уклада и связанной с этим лексики, а также характеристика отличительных черт аргентинского варианта испанского по таким аспектам, как фонетика, грамматика, лексика и фразеология.

Ключевой вопрос, поставленный в моей работе — то, какие задачи должен ставить перед собой переводчик литературы, имеющей особую окраску, и какие трудности вызывает перевод подобных произведений. Будут даны способы перевода, используемые для того, чтобы избежать потери национального колорита и в наилучшей форме передать читателю специфический характер, присущий стране и идею, заложенную автором.

В практической части приводятся примеры характерных особенностей аргентинского варианта испанского языка, найденные мной при исследовании произведений Адольфо Биоя Касареса, одного из наиболее известных и выдающихся писателей страны. Романы именно этого автора были выбраны мной для анализа, так как он родился и, несмотря на многочисленные путешествия, провёл всю свою жизнь в Буэнос-Айресе, там же происходит действие большинства его романов и рассказов. Произведения написаны невероятно живым языком, и речь персонажей, особенно диалоги, богаты лексикой, присущей именно испанскому языку Аргентины.

Для исследования я выбрала романы «Приключения фотографа в Ла-Плате» (La aventura de un fotógrafo en La Plata, 1985), «Сон на солнце» / «Спящие на солнце» (Dormir al sol, 1973) и «Дневник войны со свиньями» (Diario de la guerra del cerdo, 1969). В первых двух книгах мною были найдены примеры отличительных языковых черт, которые я выделила, сравнив с европейским вариантом. В третьем романе были выбраны национально окрашенные элементы, достойные наибольшего внимания, и было произведено их сравнение с официальным переводом книги на русский язык.

В результате проведённого исследования и изучения литературы меня поразило то, насколько богатым может быть национальный вариант языка, открывающий целый новый мир с его неповторимым характером и колоритом. Именно переводчик служит для читателей проводником в этот мир, а значит, на нём лежит большая ответственность. Работа с подобными произведениями особенно интересна для переводчика, несмотря на трудности, с которыми приходится сталкиваться, ведь литература — один из наиболее важных и в то же время увлекательных способов культурного обмена и расширения кругозора для людей во всём мире.

The name of my Master's thesis is “The peculiarities of translating Argentinian literature with examples of the works of Adolfo Bioy Casares”. Spanish is one of the most widespread languages in the world, it is spoken in a lot of countries, every one of which has its own variety of the language with its unique features. In my work I consider the special characteristics of the Argentinian variant of Spanish and the peculiarities of its translation.

In the theoretical part an overview of the main historical events of Argentina is given, those events have influenced the development of the culture, the literature, and the distinctive language features of the country. I examine the very concept of a national variant, its difference from a dialect; I base my ideas upon the views of Spanish language researchers from different countries as well as some distinguished politicians and writers from Argentina. The description of the country's traditions, its way of life and related vocabulary is provided, the characteristics of the outstanding features of the language are divided according to aspects like phonetics, grammar, vocabulary and phraseology.

The key question I address in my thesis is the following: what should be the main purpose of a literary translator dealing with texts which contain national markers, and what challenges can occur while translating this kind of narrative. I will describe the methods used for avoiding the loss of the unique color of a national variant and for transmitting this special character and the author's ideas to readers.

In the practical part examples of the features of Argentinian Spanish are given. All of these examples have been taken from the novels of Adolfo Bioy Casares, one of the most famous and outstanding writers of the country. I chose to analyze this author's works because he was born in Buenos Aires, and despite multiple trips to foreign countries he lived all his life there; most of the action of his novels and stories takes place in this city. The narrative is extremely vivid and the language of the characters, especially in the dialogues, is rich in vocabulary typical of the Argentinian variety of Spanish.

The novels chosen for my investigation are “The Adventures of a Photographer in La Plata” (La aventura de un fotógrafo en La Plata, 1985), “Asleep in the Sun” (Dormir al sol, 1973) and “Diary of the War of a Pig” (Diario de la guerra del cerdo, 1969). In the first two novels I found distinctive features of the language and compared them to the standard European variety. In the third novel, I took the most noticeable national elements and compared them to the official translation of the book into Russian.

After having conducted the research and having got familiar with the literature, I was dazzled by the discovery of how rich and abundant a national variant of a language can be, it reveals a whole new world full of its own fascinating peculiarities. The translator, being the person who serves as a guide into this world, must be aware of the responsibility it implies. Working with such narratives is especially interesting, despite all the difficulties one has to face. Literature is one of the greatest ways of cultural exchange, it helps people from all over the world acquire new knowledge and open their minds.
