The problem of translation of informal vocabulary and slang in the novel "Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close" by Jonathan Safran Foer

Abstract

В рамках представленной работы был изучен вопрос функций сленга и неформальной лексики, а также способ перевода данных единиц с английского языка на русский язык. Объектом исследования является оригинальный текст романа Дж. С. Фоера «Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close», а также вариант перевода романа на русский язык. Цель исследования состоит в выявлении функций сленговых и неформальных единиц в романе Дж. С. Фоера «Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close» и определении особенностей их перевода на русский язык. В процессе исследования было выявлено, что сленговые и неформальные единицы в романе являются одним из наиболее важных средств создания художественного образа, которые выполняют ряд функций. Исследования показало, что наиболее знаменательными функциями являются эмоционально-экспрессивная и демонстративно-мировозренческая функции. В ходе исследования был сделан вывод, что при переводе сленговых и неформальных единиц в романе зачастую были использованы переводческие трансформации. По большей части такие единицы переведены при помощи десфемистического перевода. Перед переводчиком стояла сложная задача, т.к. большая часть неформальных и сленговых единиц употреблялась в речи героя-ребенка. При этом, при переводе удалось сохранить большую часть таких единиц, таким образом мы можем утверждать о достижении адекватности при переводе.

Within the framework of the presented work, the issue of the functions of slang and informal vocabulary, as well as the method of translating these units from English into Russian, were studied. The object of the study is the original text of the novel Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close by Jonathan Safran Foer, as well as a variant of the novel's translation into Russian. The purpose of the graduation project is to identify the functions of informal and slang vocabulary in the novel by Safran Foer's Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close and determine the features of translating such vocabulary into Russian. In the course of the research, it was revealed that slang and informal units in the novel are one of the most important means of creating an artistic image, also they perform a number of functions. Research has shown that the most significant functions are emotionally-expressive and demonstrative. The study concluded that translation transformations were often used in the translation of slang and informal units in the novel. For the most part, such units are translated using a dysphemistic translation. The translator faced a difficult task, since most of the informal and slang units were used in the speech of the child character. At the same time, during the translation, it was possible to preserve most of these units, so we can come to the conclusion that adequacy has been achieved in the translation.
