The Topos of Berlin in prose by Theodor Fontane

Abstract

Работа посвящена трем наиболее известным берлинским романам Теодора Фонтане: «Госпожа Дженни Трайбель», (Frau Jenny Treibel, 1892) Пути-Перепутья», (Irrungen Wirrungen, 1887) и «Эффи Брист». (Effi Briest, 1895). Как доказывается в работе, в этих романах Т. Фонтане создает ментальную карту города Берлина и его окрестностей, которая является вместилищем культурных смыслов и сюжетообразующих схем. Таким образом, оказывается возможным говорить о топосе Берлина, который получает уникальное и многоаспектное развитие в прозе Фонтане. Цель исследования: выявить, описать, проанализировать и интерпретировать топос Берлина в прозе Т. Фонтане. В соответствии с данной целью, в исследовании поставлены следующие задачи: Рассмотреть подходы к понятию топос и локус в литературоведении и философии. Разработать принципы анализа пространства применительно к прозе Фонтане. Изучить литературоведческие труды, посвященные вопросу городского пространства в прозе Т. Фонтане. Рассмотреть берлинские эпизоды в вышеперечисленных романах Фонтане, последовательно формируя представление о топосе Берлина. 5.Проанализировать принципы пространственной репрезентации в исследуемых романах Т. Фонтане для определения функций городского топоса. Методологическая и теоретическая основа диссертации традиционна для такого вида исследования и сформировалась в опоре на труды ведущих специалистов: теоретиков и историков литературы, таких как М.М. Бахтин, Ю. М. Лотман, Э. Р. Курциус. Эмпирической базой исследования стали работы: Туркиной В. Г., Неклюдова С. Ю., Полубояриновой Л.Н., Ульрике Веддер, Рихарда Хаманна, Герхарда Кайзера. Берлинские романы представлены именами Александра фон Штенберга, Луизы Мюльбах и Адольфа Гласбреннера. Изучая топос Берлина в прозе Фонтане, мы не только вносим свой вклад в в обсуждение творчества данного автора в русскоязычной научной среде, но и демонстрируем определяющее значение пространственных отношений в его прозе. Актуальность работы обусловлена тем, что работа может быть использована, с одной стороны, при анализе городского топоса в литературе, а с другой - для реконструкции ландшафта Берлина XIX века. Новизна работы обусловлена тем обстоятельством, что в отечественном литературоведении пространственные параметры прозы Фонтане пока мало изучены, в связи с чем работа может быть актуальна при анализе как топоса Берлина, так и влияния и «берлинской» литературной традиции на творчество Теодора Фонтане.

This work is devoted to three of Theodor Fontane's best known Berlin novels, Mrs Jenny Treibel, (1892) Irrungen Wirrungen, (1887) and Effie Brist. (1895) As it is proved in the study, in these novels T. Fontane creates a mental map of the city of Berlin and its surroundings, which is a receptacle of cultural meanings and plot-forming schemas. In this way, it is possible to speak about the topos of Berlin, which receives a unique and multidimensional development in Fontane's prose. The aim of the study: to identify, describe, analyse and interpret the topos of Berlin in T. Fontane's prose. In accordance with this goal, the study poses the following tasks: 1.To consider approaches to the concept of topos and locus in literary studies and philosophy. 2.To develop the principles of analysing space as applied to Fontane's prose. 3.To study literary works devoted to the issue of urban space in T. Fontane's prose. T. Fontane. 4. To consider Berlin episodes in the aforesaid novels of Fontane, gradually forming an idea of the topos of Berlin. 5. To analyse the principles of spatial representation in the studied novels of T. Fontane to identify the functions of the city topos. The methodological and theoretical basis of the thesis is traditional for this type of research and was formed based on the works of leading specialists: theorists and historians of literature, such as M. M. Bakhtin, Y. M. Lotman, E. R. Сurtius. The empirical basis of the study was the works of: V. G. Turkina, S. Nekludov, S. R. Kurtsius. G., Neklyudov S. Y., Poluboyarinova L. N., Ulrike Vedder, Richard Hamann, Gerhard Kaiser. Berlin novels are represented by the names of Alexander von Steenberg, Louise Mühlbach, and Adolf Glasbrenner. By studying the topos of Berlin in Fontane's prose, we not only contribute to the discussion of this author's work in the Russian-speaking scientific environment, but also demonstrate the determining importance of spatial relations in his prose. The relevance of the work is conditioned by the fact that the work can be used, on the one hand, in analysing the urban topos in literature and, on the other hand, in reconstructing the landscape of 19th century Berlin. The novelty of the work is due to the fact that most of the studies on this topic have not been translated, and therefore the work can be relevant in analysing both the topos of Berlin and the influence of the Berlin literary tradition on the work of Theodor Fontane.
