Translation of football vocabulary from Italian into Russian: A case study of Italian newspapers

Abstract

Диссертация посвящена проблемам перевода газетных статей о футболе с итальянского языка на русский, непосредственно связанным с особенностями, отличающими их от других типов текстов. Актуальность данного исследования обусловлена высоким интересом, проявляемым в настоящее время к проблемам употребления спортивных терминов, и особой значимостью спортивной терминологии в межкультурной коммуникации, участившимися случаями неправильного перевода футбольной терминологии и другой информации об основных участниках спортивных матчей, вызванного различиями в употреблении того или иного футбольного термина носителями итальянского и русского языков, что нарушает понимание игры. Исследование основано на наших переводах футбольных статей La Gazzetta dello Sport. Диссертация состоит из введения, двух глав, разделенных на параграфы, заключения, библиографии, включающей 58 источников, и приложения. В первой главе представлен обзор теоретической литературы посвященной специальным языкам, особенностям языка спорта и проблемам перевода газетных и специализированных текстов. Вторая глава содержит анализ наших переводов заголовков прессы, а также терминов, обозначающих действующих лиц футбольных матчей, с итальянского языка на русский, включая сопоставительный анализ футбольных терминосистем в русском и итальянском языках. Результаты исследования позволили сделать вывод, что при переводе заголовков прессы с итальянского языка на русский особую сложность представляет наличие многочисленных сокращений и игнорирование диакритических символов при написании иностранных имен собственных. При переводе футбольных статей с итальянского языка на русский очень важно глубокое понимание терминологии, так как терминологические системы в данной языковой паре асимметричны, что затрудняет подбор эквивалентов.

This thesis focuses on the problems of translating football journalistic texts from Italian into Russian directly related to the characteristics that distinguish them from other types of texts. The particular significance of this study lies in the high level of interest currently shown in the problems of sports terminology usage, and the particular role of sports terminology in intercultural communication, the increasing incidence of mistranslations of football terminology and other information about the main participants in the sporting action, caused by differences in the use of a particular football term by Italian and Russian speakers, which stand in the way of understanding of the game. The study is based on our translations of football articles from La Gazzetta dello Sport. The thesis consists of an introduction, two chapters divided into paragraphs, a conclusion, a bibliography of 58 sources and an appendix. The first chapter presents a review of the theoretical literature on special languages, the specificities of the sports language and the problems of journalistic translation and specialised texts translation. The second chapter contains an analysis of our translations of press titles as well as terms denoting the football players from Italian into Russian, including a comparative analysis of football terminology systems in Russian and Italian. The results of the study have led us to the conclusion that the presence of numerous abbreviations and ignoring diacritical symbols when writing foreign proper names is particularly challenging in translating press titles from Italian into Russian. When translating a football article from Italian into Russian, a thorough understanding of the terminology is very important because of the assymetry of the football terminological systems in this language pair, which complicates the selection of equivalents.
