Strategies of translation of quasi-realia in science fiction: A case study of Timothy Zahn’s novels

Abstract

Данная работа посвящена исследованию способов и стратегий передачи квазиреалий в произведениях научной фантастики на материале романов Тимоти Зана по вселенной Звездных Войн. В работе осуществлён комплексный подход: для реализации исследования был изучен корпус оригинальных текстов романов "Heir to the Empire", "Dark Force Rising" и "The Last Command" и их переводов на русский язык, выполненных И. Веселовой (1996), Я. Ашмариной (2002) и К. Плешковым (2023). Результатом исследования является выявление наиболее частотных способов и основных стратегий перевода текстов романов на русский язык. Первая глава работы посвящена теоретическому подходу к понятию реалии и квазиреалии, классификации реалий в современном переводоведении, классификациям способов перевода реалий, основным стратегиям, используемым при переводе реалий и особенностям жанра научной фантастики. Вторая глава посвящена сравнительному анализу способов передачи квазиреалий в текстах переводов романов на русский язык и выявлению основной стратегии, использованной каждым из трех переводчиков. В заключении подводятся итоги исследования. Работа содержит список использованной научной литературы, словарей, электронных ресурсов, источников языкового материала. В приложении приведены все квазиреалии и их переводы, проанализированные в рамках данного исследования

This paper is devoted to the study of methods and strategies of translation of quasi-realia in works of science fiction on the material of Timothy Zahn's Star Wars novels. In this paper, we have implemented a complex approach to research. We have studied the corpus of original texts of the novels "Heir to the Empire", "Dark Force Rising" and "The Last Command" and their translations into Russian, made by I. Veselova (1996), Y. Ashmarina (2002) and K. Pleshkov (2023). The result of the research is the identification of the most frequent methods and main strategies of translating the texts of the novels into Russian. The first chapter is devoted to theoretical approach to the concept of realia and quasi-realia, classification of realia in modern translation studies, classification of methods of translation of realia main strategies used in the translation of realia and peculiarities of science fiction genre in literature. The second chapter is devoted to a comparative analysis of the ways of translating quasi-realia in the texts of translations of T. Zahn's novels into Russian and identifying the main strategy used by each of the three translators. The conclusion summarises the results of the study. The paper contains a list of the scientific literature, dictionaries, electronic resources and sources of linguistic material used. The appendix contains all the quasi-realia and their translations that were analysed as part of this study.
