Translations into Italian of Mikhail Lermontov’s novel "A Hero of Our Time" : A comparative analysis

Abstract

Данная работа посвящена теме теоретико-эмпирического анализа перевода - науки, которая в последние десятилетия привлекает все большее внимание. Предметом нашего анализа является роман "Герой нашего времени" М.Ю. Лермонтова и четыре его перевода на итальянский язык, выполненные Г. Де Доминичисом Хорио, С. Гарцонио и Ф. Гори, П. Пера и Л.В. Надаи. Мы выбрали эту работу потому, что русская литература XIX века, связанная с Кавказом, и по сей день кажется чрезвычайно близкой русским читателям, а также способна увлечь и итальянскую аудиторию, к тому же она богата сложной лексикой, которая особенно хорошо поддается переводческому анализу с итальянской стороны. Данная работа состоит из двух глав, первая из которых посвящена теоретической части и созданию адекватного контекста для эффективного понимания текста и используемых терминов, а вторая полностью посвящена практическому анализу различных терминов и выражение. В первой главе мы приводим синопсис романа и краткое изложение историко-политического контекста Кавказа в период, в который происходит действие романа, чтобы обеспечить культурную основу для понимания повествования. Далее следует несколько параграфов, в которых определяются основные теоретические аспекты перевода, излагаются новейшие подходы к переводу безэквивалентных терминов (реалий), топонимов, аллокутивов и фразеологизмов, чтобы обеспечить адекватную основу для практического анализа этих терминов и словосочетаний во второй главе. Во второй главе мы сосредоточимся на сравнении итальянских переводов лексики без эквивалентов, описывая подход каждого переводчика и, если сочтем необходимым, добавляя краткий личный комментарий о качестве перевода или стилистических решениях, связанных с ним. Значительная часть этой главы посвящена анализу перевода реалий, в котором, что вполне понятно, учитывая военное происхождение произведения, присутствует заметное количество реалий, связанных с военным миром, которые трудно перевести на итальянский язык. В части, посвященной аллокуциям и фразеологизмам, наблюдается аналогичная ситуация, с сильным присутствием лексики, связанной с военной средой Российской империи. При переводе безэквивалентной лексики мы отметили различные тенденции, обусловленные подготовкой и стилистическим выбором отдельных переводчиков: П. Пера предпочитает переводить почти всю лексику, где это возможно, Г. Де Доминицис Хорио и С. Гарсонио и Ф. Гори предпочитают транслитерировать термины без эквивалентов, а Л. В. Надаи находится где-то между этими двумя подходами, либо переводя, либо транслитерируя, в зависимости от собственного стилистического выбора. Будущие исследования могут быть направлены на изучение других работ того же автора, взяв за основу теоретический аппарат, разработанный в первой главе данной диссертации, и практический аппарат во второй.

Il presente lavoro tratta della tematica dell’analisi teorico-empirica della traduzione, una scienza che negli ultimi decenni ha preso sempre di più piede e attenzione. L’oggetto della nostra analisi è il romanzo “Un eroe del nostro tempo” di M. J. Lermontov e quattro delle sue traduzioni in italiano ad opera di G. De Dominicis Jorio, S. Garzonio e F. Gori, P. Pera e L. V. Nadai. Abbiamo scelto questa opera in quanto la letteratura russa dell’Ottocento legata al Caucaso è sentita, fino al giorno d’oggi, estremamente vicina dai lettori russi, e riesce ad affascinare anche un pubblico italiano, oltre ad essere ricca di lessico complesso che particolarmente si presta ad un’analisi traduttiva dal lato italiano. Questo lavoro è organizzato in due capitoli, il primo si incentra sulla parte teorica e sul fornire un adeguato contesto per un’efficace comprensione del testo e dei termini utilizzati, mentre il secondo è dedicato interamente all’analisi pratica dei vari termini e locuzioni presi in analisi. Nel primo capitolo, forniamo una sinossi del romanzo e una breve esposizione del contesto storico-politico del Caucaso nel periodo in cui ha luogo la narrazione del romanzo per fornire le basi culturali per comprendere la narrazione. Seguono poi vari paragrafi in cui vengono definiti i principali aspetti teorici della traduzione, vengono esposti i più recenti approcci alla traduzione dei termini senza equivalenti (realia), dei toponimi, degli allocutivi e dei fraseologismi, per fornire una base adeguata per l’analisi pratica di questi termini e locuzioni nel secondo capitolo. Nel secondo capitolo, ci concentriamo sulla comparazione delle traduzioni italiane del lessico senza equivalenti, descrivendo di volta in volta l’approccio di ogni traduttore e, se ritenuto necessario, aggiungendo un breve commentario personale sulla qualità della traduzione o sulle scelte stilistiche ad essa collegate. Buona parte di questo capitolo è dedicata all’analisi della traduzione dei realia, nei quali è presente, comprensibilmente data l’ambientazione a sfondo militare dell’opera, una cospicua quantità di realia legati al mondo militare, difficilmente traducibili in italiano. Nelle parti dedicate alle allocuzioni e ai fraseologismi si ha una situazione simile, con una forte presenza di lessico legato all’ambiente militare dell’Impero russo. Nella traduzione del lessico senza equivalenti abbiamo notato varie tendenze, dovute dalla preparazione e dalle scelte stilistiche dei singoli traduttori: P. Pera preferisce tradurre quasi tutto il lessico dove possibile, G. De Dominicis Jorio e S. Garzonio e F. Gori preferiscono traslitterare i termini senza equivalenti, mentre L. V. Nadai si trova a metà tra questi due approcci, sia traducendo che traslitterando, a seconda delle proprie scelte stilistiche. Future ricerche potrebbero incentrarsi sullo studio di altre opere dello stesso autore, prendendo come base l'apparato teorico elaborato nel primo capitolo di questa tesi e quello pratico nel secondo.

This paper deals with the subject of the theoretical-empirical analysis of translation, a science that has been gaining more and more attention in recent decades. The subject of our analysis is the novel "A Hero of Our Time" by M. J. Lermontov and four of its translations into Italian by G. De Dominicis Jorio, S. Garzonio and F. Gori, P. Pera and L. V. Nadai. We choose to approach this subject because nineteenth-century Russian literature related to the Caucasus is felt as extremely close by Russian readers, up to the present day. It also manages to fascinate an Italian audience, as well as being rich in complex vocabulary that particularly lends itself to a translation analysis from the Italian side. This paper is organized into two chapters, the first focusing on the theoretical part and on providing an adequate context for an effective understanding of the text and the terms used, while the second is devoted entirely to the practical analysis of the various terms and locutions taken into analysis. In the first chapter, we provide a synopsis of the novel and a brief explanation the historical-political context of the Caucasus in the period in which the novel takes place to provide the cultural basis for understanding the work of Lermotov. This part is then followed by several paragraphs in which the main theoretical aspects of translation are defined and the most recent approaches to the translation of terms without equivalents (realia), toponyms, terms used to refer to other characters, and phrasemes are exposed, to provide an adequate basis for the practical analysis of these terms and locutions in the second chapter. In the second chapter, we focus on comparing the Italian translations of the lexicon without equivalents, describing each translator's approach from time to time and, if deemed necessary, adding a brief personal commentary on the quality of the translation or on the related stylistic choices. A large part of this chapter is devoted to an analysis of the translation of the realia, in which there is, understandably given the work's military-related setting, a conspicuous amount of realia that are difficult to translate into Italian. In the parts devoted to allocutions and phrasemes we have a similar situation, with a strong presence of vocabulary related to the military environment of the Russian Empire. In the translation of the lexicon without equivalents we have noticed various tendencies, due to the preparation and stylistic choices of individual translators: P. Pera prefers to translate almost all the lexicon where possible, G. De Dominicis Jorio and S. Garzonio and F. Gori prefer to transliterate the terms without equivalents, while L. V. Nadai is somewhere in between these two approaches, either translating or transliterating, depending on his own stylistic choices. Future research could focus on the study of other works by the same author, taking as its basis the theoretical apparatus elaborated in the first chapter of this thesis and the practical apparatus in the second.
