Functions of Gerund in the modern Italian fiction

Abstract

В данной работе представлено исследование функциональных и семантических особенностей герундия и герундиальных конструкций в языке современной итальянской художественной литературы. Актуальность работы обусловлена тем, что использование герундия в итальянском языке изменилось за последние десятилетия, и ученые замечают различные тенденции в его функционировании. Однако в настоящее время исследователи расходятся во мнениях по этому вопросу, поэтому нам представляется необходимым проводить анализ на основе нового языкового стандарта italiano neostandard, который находится на стадии формирования. Материалом для данной работы послужили герундии, обнаруженные нами в таких художественных произведениях, как “Шелк” и “Смит & Вессон” А. Барикко, “Львы Сицилии. Сага о Флорио” С. Аучи, “Девушка в тумане” Д. Карризи. Цель исследования состоит в том, чтобы проследить, как функционирует герундий и герундиальные конструкции в современном итальянском литературном языке согласно тенденциям нового регистра italiano neostandard. Настоящая работа состоит из оглавления, введения, двух глав, заключения, списка использованной литературы и приложения. Первая глава посвящена изучению теоретических исследований о переходе герундия из латинского языка в итальянский, функционировании герундия в italiano standard, сопоставлении italiano standard и italiano neostandard, а также развитии герундия и герундиальных перифраз в новом языковом регистре. Во второй главе представлены несколько классификаций функций герундия и затем на базе этих классификаций и теоретической основы произведен анализ функциональных особенностей герундия в выбранных произведениях. Каждая глава сопровождается соответствующими выводами. В заключении подводятся итоги исследования.

This bachelor dissertation presents a study of the functional and semantic features of gerunds and gerundial constructions in the language of contemporary Italian fiction. The relevance of the work depends on the fact that the use of gerunds in the Italian language has changed over the past decades and linguists have noticed various trends in their functioning. However, currently, the researchers disagree on this issue, as it is necessary to conduct an analysis based on the new language standard italiano neostandard, which is in the process of being formed. Therefore, new information about the functional features of gerunds and gerundial constructions in the new linguistic register is needed. This research leans on the gerunds we found in such works of fiction as A. Baricco’s “Silk” and “Smith & Wesson”, S. Auchi’s “The Florios of Sicily”, D. Carrisi’s “The Girl in the Fog”. The aim of the study is to trace how gerunds and gerundial constructions function in contemporary Italian literary language according to the trends of the new register italiano neostandard. This paper consists of a table of contents, an introduction, two chapters, a conclusion, a list of references and an appendix. The first chapter examines theoretical research on the transition of the gerund from Latin to Italian, the functioning of the gerund in italiano standard, the comparison between italiano standard and italiano neostandard, and the development of gerund and gerundial constructions in the new linguistic register. The second chapter presents several classifications of gerund functions and then, on the basis of these classifications and theoretical background, we analyse the functioning of the gerund in selected works. Each chapter is accompanied by relevant conclusions.
