Features of the description of the surrounding reality in Ivan Bunin’s short prose and the specific issues of their translation into English: A case study of the stories from the cycle "Dark Avenues"

Abstract

В настоящей выпускной квалификационной работе рассматриваются отличительные лингвистические черты произведений И.А. Бунина, передающие специфику художественной реальности авторских текстов, и особенности передачи этих черт на иностранный язык. Материал исследования – три рассказа писателя, входящие в цикл «Темные аллеи», – «Холодная осень», «Пароход “Саратов”», «Ворон» и их перевод на английский язык, выполненный Хью Аплиным. Словоформы, отобранные из произведений и распределенные в ходе исследования по семи тематическим группам, представляют интерес с позиций: морфемики и морфологии («рубашечка», «горбами летящую»); семантики; сочетаемости («мягко шумящий партер»). Внимание уделяется и синтаксическому построению более крупных текстовых отрезков. Выделенные в работе особенности лексем и фрагментов текста вызывают значительные сложности при переводе на английский язык. Трудности связаны в том числе с существенными различиями в синтаксическом и морфемном устройстве рассматриваемых языков. С точки зрения лексики в результате разбора переводного текста выяснилось, что смысл части проанализированных слов передан полностью; части – не в полной мере (утрачиваются коннотации и оттенки значения) или же, наоборот, с приращением / изменением семантики, не присущей словоупотреблениям в оригинальных текстах (в основном это касается безэквивалентной лексики).

At this final qualification work the distinctive linguistic features of Ivan Bunin's novels, which transmit the specifics of the artistic reality of the author's texts, and the peculiarities of translating these features into a foreign language are considered. The material of the research is three stories of the writer, included in the cycle "Dark Avenues", – "A Cold Autumn", "The Steamer "Saratov"", "The Raven" and their translation into English, made by Hugh Aplin. The word forms, selected from the novels and distributed into seven thematic groups during the study, are of a particular interest from the perspective of: morphemics and morphology ("рубашечка", "горбами летящую"); semantics; compatibility ("мягко шумящий партер"). Attention is also paid to the syntactic construction of larger text segments. The peculiarities of the lexemes and text fragments highlighted in the work cause significant challenges when translated into English. The difficulties are also due to considerable differences in the syntactic and morphemic structure of the languages in question. In terms of vocabulary, the analysis of the translated text revealed that the meaning of some of the examined words is fully transferred. Another group of lexemes is not fully translated (connotations and shades of meaning are lost) or, conversely, transferred with an increase / change in semantics which is not characteristic of the word usage in the original texts (this applies mainly to the non-equivalent vocabulary).
