Translation of psychological states of the narrator and the main character in Vladimir Nabokov's novel "Other Shores": A case study of the Russian original and the author's translation "Speak, Memory"

Abstract

В выпускной квалификационной работе исследуется специфика перевода эмоционально насыщенных единиц с русского языка на английский. Основной целью работы является определение способов передачи эмоциональной составляющей книги В. Набокова «Другие берега» на английский язык. Объектом исследования является эмоционально-экспрессивная составляющая текста, предметом — особенности передачи эмоционально-оценочного значения языковых единиц, отражающих психологическое состояние героев художественного текста. Теоретической базой исследования послужили научные труды А. Б. Есина, В. Н. Комиссарова, О. Е. Романовской и др., посвященные проблемам психологизма, перевода эмоциональных единиц, повествовательной организации текстов В. Набокова и прочим актуальным для исследования вопросам. Эмпирическим материалом исследования послужили книги В. Набокова «Другие берега» и “Speak, memory”. Сопоставительный анализ разноязычных текстов позволил соотнести их по степени эмоциональности и определить примененные автором переводческие трансформации эмоционально насыщенных элементов. Было выявлено, что писатель стремился упростить межкультурную коммуникацию и адаптировать оригинальную книгу для англоязычного читателя с учетом его языковой картины мира, для чего преобразовал и существенно сократил эмоциональное содержание подлинника.

The thesis examines the peculiarities of translating emotionally saturated units from Russian into English. The main goal of the research is to determine ways to transfer the emotional component of V. Nabokov's book "Other Shores" into English. The object of the work is the emotional and expressive components of the text, the subject is the features of translating linguistic units reflecting psychological states of characters of a literary text. The theoretical basis of the thesis is the scientific works of A. B. Esin, V. N. Komissarov, O. E. Romanovskaya etc., devoted to the problems of psychologism, emotional units’ translation, the narrative organization of V. Nabokov's texts and other relevant issues. The research is exemplified by V. Nabokov's books "Other Shores" and "Speak, memory". A comparative analysis of these texts reveals their degree of emotionality and allows to identify the author’s translation transformations of emotionally saturated elements. The study shows that the writer sought to simplify intercultural communication and adapt the original book for the English-speaking reader by transforming and reducing the emotional content of the original version.
