Influence of rhythm on the choice of the place of stress in a word

Abstract

Целью данной работы является проверка гипотезы о том, влияет ли ритмическая структура фразы на постановку ударения в двусложных словах (на материале русского языка). Эксперимент проводился на материале несуществующих двусложных слов, построенных в соответствии с русской фонотактикой (псевдослов). Из возможных псевдослов отбирались такие, в которых носители русского языка не отдают предпочтения одному из двух слогов с точки зрения постановки ударения. В ходе эксперимента отобранные псевдослова помещались в разные ритмические контексты, провоцирующие постановку ударения на первом или на втором слоге. Предполагалось, что если в русском языке действует ритмическое правило, то говорящие будут стараться избегать произношения двух ударных слогов подряд. Составленные тексты были предложены для прочтения носителям русского языка. Далее проводился дополнительный эксперимент, в котором респонденты осознанно принимали решение о постановке ударения на первый или второй слог в указанном слове помещенном в тот же ритмический контекст. Последующий анализ записей чтения и ответов информантов не подтвердил исходную гипотезу. Из 20 информантов только один расставил ударения во всех контекстах так, как ожидалось с точки зрения ритмического правила. При этом сами псевдослова отличались по тому, как они встраивались в ритмический контекст.

The purpose of this work is to test the hypothesis of whether the rhythmic structure of a phrase affects the stress in two-syllable words (based on the material of the Russian language). The experiment was conducted on the material of non-existent two-syllable words constructed in accordance with Russian phonotactics (pseudoswords). From possible pseudoswords, those were selected in which native speakers of the Russian language do not give preference to one of the two syllables in terms of stress. During the experiment, the selected pseudowords were placed in different rhythmic contexts, provoking the stress on the first or second syllable. It was assumed that if a rhythmic rule is in effect in the Russian language, then speakers would try to avoid pronouncing two stressed syllables in a row. The compiled texts were offered for reading to native speakers of the Russian language. Further, an additional experiment was conducted in which respondents consciously decided to stress the first or second syllable in the specified word placed in the same rhythmic context. Subsequent analysis of the reading records and the informants' responses did not confirm the original hypothesis. Of the 20 informants, only one placed the accents in all contexts as expected from the point of view of the rhythmic rule. At the same time, the pseudowords themselves differed in how they were integrated into the rhythmic context.
