Problems of polysemy and homonymy in oil and gas terminology

Abstract

Данная дипломная работа посвящена исследованию функционирования омонимов и полисемантических слов в нефтегазовой терминологии. Актуальность проводимого в диссертации исследования обусловлена отсутствием четких критериев разграничения данных явлений в современной лингвистической науке. В исследовании даются определения анализируемых феноменов, их классификации, а также рассматриваются различные подходы к разграничению двух явлений. Дается детальный обзор свойств терминов и понятия терминосистемы. Исследуется корпус полисемантических терминов и терминов – омонимов, полученных из словарных статей трех авторитетных лексикографических источников, общим объемом 144 лексемы. Анализ эмпирического материала позволил автору сделать вывод о том, что термины – омонимы редко маркируются в словарях соответствующими пометами (24%). Отмечается довольно частотное употребление омонимичных сокращений и аббревиатур (28%), а омофоны встречаются в нефтегазовой терминосистеме меньше – около трети (36%). Также установлена словообразовательная роль метафорического и метонимического переноса (11%). В ходе анализа по концептуальному признаку выявлено 9 основных групп терминов.

This graduation thesis is devoted to homonyms and polysemic words in oil and gas terminology. The relevance of the research conducted in the dissertation is due to the lack of clear criteria for distinguishing between these phenomena in modern linguistic science. The study provides definitions of the analyzed phenomena, their classification, and also considers various approaches to distinguishing between the two phenomena. A detailed review of the properties of terms and the concept of a terminological system is given. The corpus of polysemic terms and terms – homonyms, obtained from dictionary entries of three authoritative lexicographic sources, with a total volume of 144 lexemes, is investigated. The analysis of the empirical material allowed the author to conclude that homonymous terms are rarely marked in dictionaries with the corresponding labels (24%). There is a fairly frequent use of homonymous abbreviations (28%), and homophones are less common in the oil and gas terminology – about a third (36%). The word-formation role of metaphorical and metonymic transfer was also established (11%). In the course of the analysis on a conceptual basis, 9 main groups of terms were identified.
