Comparison of the ways of linguistic representation of gender stereotypes: A case study of the language of the Internet

Abstract

Выпускная квалификационная работа посвящена исследованию того, как гендерные стереотипы находят языковое выражение в обсуждениях родительских проблем в Интернете. Существует много работ, посвященных гендерным стереотипам и языку Интернета, однако родительский дискурс довольно редко привлекает исследователей. Однако обсуждение поступков матерей и отцов может стать ценным материалом для исследования входящих в национальную картину мира представлений о родителях. Для анализа было отобрано 100 статей в различных Интернет-изданий и 319 комментариев с обсуждением схожих резонансных тем. В ходе работы были выделены самые частотные наименования матерей и отцов, определены значимые глаголы и определения, использованные для характеристики действий и поступков родителей, отмечены частотные синтаксические конструкции и тематические группы лексики. Проанализированные единицы продемонстрировали, что в отношении отцов чаще используют прямые оценки в односоставных предложениях (негативно окрашенные существительные, определения и бранная лексика), а отношение к матерям выражают глаголы (семантика оставления, рождения, перемещения), то есть двусоставных предложений в обсуждениях их поступков больше. Само слово «отец» часто заменяется другими антропонимами, в то время как «мать» является самым частым наименованием женщины в текстах. Таким образом, языковые средства напрямую указывают на два главных гендерных стереотипа — о материнстве как главной ценности в жизни женщины и несостоятельности отца как родителя.

This graduate qualification work is devoted to the study of gender stereotypes’ linguistic expression in discussions of parental problems on the Internet. There are many works focused on gender stereotypes and the language of the Internet, but parental discourse rarely attracts researchers. However, the discussion of the actions of mothers and fathers can become valuable material for the study of stereotypes about parents which form the national picture of the world. For analysis there were selected 100 articles in various online-media and 319 comments discussing similar resonant topics. In the process of the work, we identified the most frequent names of mothers and fathers, defined significant verbs and definitions, frequency syntactic constructions and thematic groups of vocabulary. The analyzed units demonstrated that talking about fathers informants use direct assessments more often in one-part sentences (negatively colored nouns, definitions and swear words), and the attitude towards mothers is expressed by verbs (semantics of abandonment, birth, displacement), therefore there are more two-part sentences in discussions of their actions.The word «father» itself is often replaced by other anthroponyms, while «mother» is the most frequent name of a woman in texts. Thus, the language of this discourse directly points to two main gender stereotypes — about motherhood as the main value in a woman's life and the failure of the father as a parent.
