Transmission of synaesthesia in the translation of F. Scott Fitzgerald's novel "The Great Gatsby" from English into Korean

Abstract

В работе проводится анализ синестемических метафор, использованных Ф. С. Фицджеральдом в его романе «Великий Гэтсби», исследуются особенности и проблемы их перевода с английского на корейский язык на материале популярного перевода романа У. Кимом. В теоретической части представлено определение понятий синестезии и синестемии с разных точек зрения. Примеры синестемических метафор в английском языке классифицированы по категориям канала восприятия. Также, рассматривается феномен синестемии в корейском языке, приведены и прокомментированы примеры различных синестемических выражений на корейском языке. В практической части описан корпус материала, собранный из романа «Великий Гэтсби» и его перевода на корейский язык. Результаты анализа английских и корейских синестемических метафор представлены в таблицах и диаграммах. Рассмотрены основные каналы восприятия и их сочетания со вспомогательными, а также выделены основные переводческие приемы. Сделан вывод о том, что типологические различия между английским и корейским языками, а также различия различие между культурами и традициями их носителей не оказывают существенного влияния на эквивалентность перевода синестемических метафор.

This work analyzes the synesthetic metaphors used by F. S. FitzGerald in his novel "The Great Gatsby" and studies the features and problems of their translation from English into Korean on the material of the popular translation of W. Kim. The theoretical part presents the definition of synesthesia and synesthesia concepts from different points of view. Examples of synesthetic metaphors in English are classified according to the categories of perception channel. Also, the phenomenon of synesthesia in Korean is shown, and examples of various synesthetic expressions in Korean are commented on. The practical part describes the corpus of material collected from the novel "Great Gatsby" and its translation into Korean. The results of analyzing English and Korean synesthetic metaphors are presented in tables and diagrams. The main channels of perception and their combination with auxiliary ones are presented, and the main translation techniques are highlighted. It was concluded that typological differences between English and Korean languages, as well as differences between cultures and traditions of their speakers, do not have a significant effect on the equivalence of translation of synesthetic metaphors.
