Conservation of underwater archaeology ceramic objects from the water area of the Gulf of Finland: a case study of objects raised from the ship "Archangel Raphael"

Работа освещает особенности подводной археологии на примере затонувшего судна «Арзангел Рафаил» и рассказывает о специфике сохранности артефактов, которые провели время под водой. Цель исследования состоит в выявление специфики влияния вод Финского залива на объекты подводной археологии. Задачи исследования состояли в обобщении и систематизации результатов ранних исследований; изучения и анализа принципов и методов консервации для подводно-археологической керамики. Исследование проводилось на основе консервации керамических фрагментов с судна Архангел Рафаил. Рассмотрены особенностях влияния на находки слабосоленых, холодных, темных вод акватории Балтийского моря. Проведена атрибуция подводных артефактов. Для идентификации посуды были найдены аналоги и составлены реконструкции форм. Фрагменты относятся к образцам Северной Европы. Основная сложность работы состояла в отборе необходимых сведений по влиянию воды на артефакты. Проверка исследования осложнялась многочисленностью керамических находок. Апробация проводилось на основе анализа отчетов о подводных исследованиях и рекомендаций по методике консервации. Проведены микроскопические, химические, рентген- и спектральные анализы для выявления элементного состава наслоений. Итогом апробации является консервация сильно фрагментированных, с большим числом утрат керамических находок. В работе участвовало 126 фрагментов из которых собралось 9 форм. Практика подбора, атрибуции и консервации найденных керамических фрагментов, послужит дополнительной базой для консервации объектов подводных исследований.

The work highlights the peculiarities of underwater archeology using the example of the sunken ship "Arzangel Raphael" and tells about the peculiarities of the preservation of artifacts that spent time under water. The purpose of the study is to identify the specifics of the waters of the Gulf of Finland for objects of underwater archeology. The objectives of the research were to summarize and systematize the results of early research; study and analysis of the principles and methods of conservation for underwater archaeological ceramics. The research was carried out on the basis of the conservation of ceramic fragments from the Archangel Raphael vessel. The features of the influence of slightly salted, cold, dark waters of the Baltic Sea on the findings are considered. Attribution of underwater artifacts has been carried out. To identify the dishes, analogues were found and reconstructions of the forms were made. Fragments for samples from Northern Europe. The main difficulty of the work consisted in the selection of the necessary information on the effect of water on artifacts. Verification of the study was complicated by the multitude of ceramic finds. The approbation was carried out on the basis of the analysis of reports on underwater research and recommendations on the method of conservation. Microscopic, chemical, X-ray and spectral analyzes have been carried out for the current elemental composition of the layers. The result of approbation is the conservation of highly fragmented, with a large number of losses, ceramic finds. The work involved 126 fragments of which 9 forms were assembled. The practice of selection, attribution and conservation of the found ceramic fragments will serve as an additional basis for the conservation of objects of underwater research.
