Emphasis as a translation studies issue: A case study of speeches by American and British politicians and their Russian translations

Abstract

Настоящее исследование посвящено проблемам перевода эмфатических конструкций английского языка в политическом дискурсе. Рассмотрены особенности жанра политической речи, а также трудности перевода английских эмфатических конструкций на материале речей англоязычных политиков. В рамках коммуникативного подхода к переводу выявлены наиболее частотные переводческие трансформации, используемые при переводе эмфатических конструкций для передачи их коммуникативного значения. Сделана попытка анализа ряда переводов с позиции коммуникативно-функционального подхода. Показано, что стратегия терциарного перевода, обусловленная целью последнего, допускает значительное нивелирование эмфазы, т.е. неполную передачу коммуникативного компонента высказывания.

The study focuses on the problems of translating emphatic structures in English political discourse into Russian. Features of political speech are outlined and some approaches to emphatic structures translation based on translation activity setting are considered. Within the communicative approach to translation, techniques most frequently used to render the pragmatic meaning of emphatic structures are examined. An attempt to analyze a number of translations within the communicative-and-functional approach is made. It is shown that the strategy of tertiary translation allows significant leveling of emphasis, i.e. incomplete pragmatic component rendering.
