Russian and English idioms motivated by general European cultural scenarios: A comparative analysis of idioms containing the words 'devil', 'hell', 'чёрт' and 'ад' and their quasi-synonyms

Данная работа посвящена сопоставительному анализу семантики англоязычных идиом со словами devil, hell и русскоязычных идиом со словами ад, черт и их синонимами в русле сложившегося в последние годы нового подхода к трактовке идиом как текстовых феноменов. Актуальность работы объясняется тем, что с появлением корпусов текстов накапливается все больше данных о том, что функционирование идиом в тексте противоречит представлениям об идиомах как о переосмысленных словосочетаниях, значение которых не выводимо из значения их составляющих, характерным для денотативно-референциальной теории. В своей работе мы преследуем следующую цель: выявить особенности функционирования идиом с компонентами devil, hell, черт, ад и их синонимами и их иносказательно-оценочный потенциал в английском и русском языках. В ходе работы мы доказываем, что слова devil, hell, дьявол, черт, ад и их квазисинонимы полностью сохраняют свое значение в составе идиоматических выражений, а также то, что значение слов – компонентов идиомы влияет на употребление идиомы в контексте. Анализ слов-компонентов также свидетельствует о том, что культурная специфичность проявляется на лексическом уровне, поскольку языки по-разному категоризируют опыт представителей разных культур. Среди рассмотренных русскоязычных и англоязычных идиом отсутствуют точные эквиваленты в силу различия значений слов-компонентов.

The project is dedicated to comparative analysis of English idioms with words devil, hell and Russian idioms with words черт, ад and their synonyms as a part of a new approach to idioms as textual phenomena. The importance of this research is apparent due to the fact that a lot of data from text corpora have accumulated that idioms functioning in the text contradicts the notion of idioms as indivisible units whose meaning does not derive from the meaning of their constituents, which is typical for denotative-referential theory. The purpose of the project is to identify characteristics of idioms with constituents devil, hell, черт, ад and their synonyms in contexts, and to identify their figurative and evaluative potential in the English and the Russian languages. In the course of research we will prove that the words devil, hell, дьявол, черт, ад and their contextual synonyms keep their meaning entirely as parts of idiomatic expressions, and that the meaning of compounds influences usage of idioms in the context. Analysis of the words also demonstrates that cultural specificity manifests itself on the lexical level because languages categorize experience of various cultures in different ways. English idioms in question have no precise equivalents among Russian idioms, for their constituents possess diverging meanings.
