Transformation of the "Love Story" Archetype in the American Musical of the Last Third of the 20th - Early 21st Centuries

Abstract

В данной дипломной работе подвергается анализу архетип love story в американском мюзикле последней трети ХХ - начала ХХI века. В качестве основного предмета исследования в нашей работе мы выделяем связь мюзикла и массовой культуры и трансформацию архетипа love story, происходившую под влиянием изменений в обществе и осуществлявшуюся посредством развития характеров персонажей и музыкальных средств выразительности. Работа заключает в себе освещение архетипа love story как важной составляющей мюзикла и анализ процесса трансформации, происходящего в нем. Данная работа состоит из двух глав. В первой главе рассматривается мюзикл, как важная часть массовой культуры Америки. Во второй главе освещается отражение архетипа love story в американских мюзиклах с 1970-х по настоящее время. В заключении делается вывод о том, что с течением времени теме любви уделяется меньше внимания, а остальные части жизни героев, наоборот, освещаются больше. Мюзикл наполнился большим психологизмом, уделяется больше внимание самой личности. Женские персонажи за несколько десятилетий проходят эволюцию от формального приложения к мужчине, нужного в большей степени для того, чтобы раскрыть его историю, до самостоятельных и сильных личностей, способных принимать решения.

In this thesis we analyze the love story archetype in the American musical of the last third of the twentieth and the beginning of the twenty-first century. The main subject of this research is the connection between musical and mass culture and the transformation of the love story archetype, which was happening due to the social changes and was exercised through the development of characters and musical expressive means. This project contains presentation of the love story archetype as an essential part of the musical. We also analyze the process of transformation happening in the musical. This project consists of two chapters. The first chapter is dedicated to the musical as an important part of America's mass culture. The second chapter highlights the reflection of the love story archetype in American musicals from the 1970s till present. In conclusion it is stated that as time went by the theme of love started to receive less attention, whereas other parts of characters’ lives, on the contrary, became more important the stories of musicals. Due to those changes the musical has acquired greater psychological content since more attention was paid to the personality itself. In a few decades female characters evolved from a formal attachment to a male character into independent and strong individuals capable of making decisions by themselves.
