Toponymy of the USA and Great Britain: Contrastive Analysis (etymological, lexical and semantic aspects)

Abstract

Настоящая выпускная квалификационная работа посвящена сопоставлению топонимии Великобритании и США. В работе были проанализированы топосистемы британского графства Шропшир и американского штата Пенсильвания. Были рассмотрены системы именований английского графства и американского штата с точки зрения их этимологии и семантики. Особое внимание было уделено историческим, культурным и социальным особенностям ареалов и их влиянию на становление топосистем исследуемых территорий. На основании проведенного исследования были установлены причины сходства и различия двух систем именований.

The research deals with the contrastive analysis of the toponymy of Great Britain and the USA. The placenames of the English county of Shropshire and the American state of Pennsylvania were chosen for the analysis. The language material is approached from different aspects: etymological and semantic. The focus of the research is to indentify historical, cultural and social features that influenced the formation of the toposystems. As a result, the causes of the similarities and differences of these two toposystems were defined.
