Politics and Philosophy in Seneca's Life and Works

Abstract

Работа посвящена личности Луция Аннея Сенеки - политика и философа, а также наставника императора Нерона. Из-за неоднозначных оценок его жизни и деятельности античными авторами в отечественной и зарубежной историографии до сих пор ведутся оживленные дискуссии о вкладе Сенеки в историю, философию и литературу. Целью данного исследования является детальное изучение биографии философа, включающей его политическую карьеру, и подробный анализ литературного творчества и философского наследия, оставленного им. В первой главе подробно рассматривается жизненный путь и политическая карьера Сенеки; во второй главе внимание сосредоточено на особенностях стоицизма в интерпретации философа и на его главных философских трудах; заключительная глава представляет собой детальный анализ “Нравственных писем к Луцилию”, где обозначены основные проблемы, связанные с их изучением, и установлена значимость произведения для современности. В ходе изучения личности Луция Аннея Сенеки было сделано несколько основных выводов: в политической жизни империи Сенека играл важную, но не первостепенную роль; его роль оказалась наиболее значимой в развитии философии и адаптации стоического учения к римской действительности I в. н.э.; “Нравственные письма к Луцилию” представляют собой универсальное собрание морально-этических правил, повлиявшее на развитие философии и остающееся актуальным до сих пор. Противоречивый характер личности Сенеки и его произведений дает плодотворную почву для дальнейших исследований по истории Рима I в. н.э.

The work is dedicated to the personality of Lucius Annaeus Seneca - a politician and philosopher, as well as a mentor to Emperor Nero. Due to ambiguous assessments of his life and work by ancient authors in domestic and foreign historiography, there are still lively discussions about Seneca's contribution to history, philosophy and literature. The purpose of this work is a detailed study of the philosopher’s biography, including his political career and a detailed analysis of literary creativity and the philosophical heritage left by him. The first chapter details the life and political career of Seneca; in the second chapter attention is focused on the peculiarities of Stoicism in the interpretation of the philosopher and on his main philosophical works; the final chapter include a detailed analysis of Seneca's “Epistulae Morales ad Lucilium”, which identified the main problems associated with their study and established the significance of the work for the present. In the course of the Lucius Annaeus Seneca’s personality study, several important conclusions were drawn: in the political life of the Empire Seneca played an important but not the main role; the philosopher in politics was unable to translate the Stoic ideals into practice, in view of the atmosphere of lawlessness and the decline of the mores of Ist century in AD; his role was most significant in the development of philosophy and the adaptation of the Stoic doctrine in Rome of that period; " Epistulae Morales ad Lucilium " - represent a universal collection of moral and ethical rules that influenced the development of philosophy and turned out to be relevant in the modern era. The contradictory character of the personality of Seneca and his works gives fertile ground for further research on the history of Rome in the Ist century in AD.
