The novel «The Disconnected» (Tutunamayanlar) by Oguz Atay in the context of the 20th century literary practice

Abstract

Магистерская диссертация посвящена роману «Неприкаянные» (Tutunamayanlar) турецкого писателя Огуза Атая и месту произведения как в творчестве писателя, так и в литературном процессе Турции ХХ века. Целью работы является комплексный анализ романа, характеристика его художественных особенностей, а также рассмотрение влияния произведения на складывание литературного процесса в регионе в конце XX - начале XXI века. Первая глава посвящена турецкому литературному контексту конца 60 - начала 70 годов ХХ в. Рассматриваются история возникновения романа «Неприканные», причины «непонимания» читателями и критиками этого романа сразу после издания и резкого взлета его популярности десятилетия спустя. Во второй главе прослеживается жизненный и творческий путь Огуза Атая, история его становления как автора, а также дается краткое описание всех произведений писателя и определяется их место в литературном процессе конца 60 - начала 70 годов ХХ века. В третьей главе рассматриваются художественные особенности собственно романа «Неприкаянные» в контексте смены литературных направлений. Нашей задачей является показать, что роман относится к переходному периоду между модернизмом и постмодернизмом. В заключении приводится общие выводы. Базу работы составляли литературоведческие исследования как российских (Образцов, 2015; Утургаури, 1982), так и зарубежных (Aytaç, 1990; Ecevit, 2005; Moran, 2008) тюркологов. Особое внимание было уделено оценке творчества Огуза Атая современными турецкими писателями (Орхан Памук, Бильге Карасу и др), были проанализированы их мемуары Орхан Памук, Йусуф Алтыган) и интервью (Элиф Шафак, Пынар Кюр и т.д). Также в целях расширения теоретической базы исследования были использованы разработки, характеризующие литературный процесс в странах Запада. Проведенный анализ продемонстрировал, что роман, не востребованный в период издания, приобрел культовый статус впоследствии благодаря новаторской технике изложения и концентрации на теме «неприкаянности» турецкого интеллигента, которая ранее не затрагивалась в художественных произведениях. На данный момент роман занимает совершенно особое место в рамках турецкой литературы и является перспективным в контексте продолжения как стилевого, так и содержательного анализа.

The dissertation is devoted to the analysis of Oguz Atay’s novel “The Disconnected” (Tutunamayanlar) and its place among both the works of the author and in the literary process of the 20th century Turkey. The aim of the dissertation is to carry out the complex analysis of the novel, characterise its literary features and artistic peculiarities as well as to examine the novel’s role in the literary process of the region at the end of 20th – beginning of 21st centuries. The first chapter is devoted to placing the novel “The Disconnected” in the literary context of the 1960s-1970s. The major aim of the analysis that is carried out in this chapter is to specify the reasons for the small demand and low relevance of the novel in the sociocultural context of its creation and rapid rise of its popularity in the beginning of 21st century. The second chapter examines Oguz Atay’s artistic biography, tracking his development as an author and gives some brief characteristics of his major works. The place of Atay’s works is also defined in the context of the literary process in Turkey in the end of 1960s-1970s. In the third chapter we turn to analysis of the literary features of the novel in the context of the shift in the literary trends. Our major task is to show that the novel reflects the transitional period between modernist and postmodernist literature. General conclusions are drawn in the last chapter. The dissertation is based on the works by both Russian and foreign literary critics. The major focus is put on the Atay’s work evaluation among modern Turkish writers through analysis of their memoirs and interviews. Also, in order to expand the theoretical base of the research the analytical works concerning the literary process in Western Europe were used. The analysis showed that the novel that was underestimated while first published gained popularity afterwards thanks to innovative techniques of story-telling and concentration on the restlessness of the Turkish intellectuals, that did not appear in the literary works before. Now the novel holds a very special place in the context of the Turkish literature and offers a lot of opportunities for continuation of research concerning both its style and content.
