Images of Christ in the work of Vasiliy Polenov. An analysis from the artistic, historical and religious points of view

Abstract

Данная дипломная работа посвящена образам Иисуса Христа в цикле картин «Из жизни Христа» Василия Поленова, который, по мнению самого художника, стал главным трудом его жизни. Однако, в истории изучения творчества живописца за Поленовым, главным образом, закрепляется статус талантливого пейзажиста и яркого культурного деятеля. Сложившееся положение зачастую не позволяло подробно рассмотреть иные стороны творчества художника. В то же время, сложное отношение к религии в советское время затрудняло понимание идейно-философского содержания картин, связанных с образом Христа. В работе автор стремится охарактеризовать цикл картин посредством формального анализа. А также выявить основные идеи, способствующие созданию образа Иисуса через призму историко-религиозного анализа, обращаясь к книгам: «Жизнь Иисуса» Эрнеста Ренана, «Иисус из Назарета» Йозеца Ратцингера (Бенедикта XVI), а также «Иисус Христос. Жизнь и учение» Митрополита Илариона (Афлеева).

This thesis explores the images of Jesus Christ in the work of V.D. Polenov, who considered the series of paintings titled “The life of Christ” to be the greatest work of his life. At the same time, previous studies of his work described Polenov mainly as a talented landscape artist and a prominent cultural luminary. Existing perception has hindered examination of other aspects of Polenov’s work so far. Furthermore, negative attitude to religion in the soviet period made it difficult to appreciate the underlying philosophy of his Biblical paintings that portrayed Christ. This thesis focuses on characterizing the series of paintings “The life of Christ” through formal analysis as well as identifying the main ideas from historical and religious points of view that contributed to creation of the image of Christ by Polenov. To achieve these objectives this paper makes use of an extensive range of archive materials and other information sources, including the following books: “Life of Jesus” by Ernest Renan, “Jesus of Nazareth” by Aloisius Ratzinger (Benedict XVI), and “Jesus Christ. Life and Teachings” by Metropolitan Ilarion (Alfeev).
