The implementation of environmental management systems in Russian companies: International context

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to reveal the specifics of EMS implementation in Russia in order to compare the process of EMS/ISO 14001 adoption in Russian companies to international experience. Three types of interview is accomplished encompassing both quantitative and qualitative approaches with a cumulative sample of 1332 companies. The potential of Russian companies to adopt EMS/ISO 14001 is examined. The effects of business environment on EMS implementation in Russia are described. Specifics of EMS implementation process in Russian companies is revealed and compared to the international experience. Market research and stakeholders analysis is conducted. A number of issues related to problems with the implementation of EMS are identified, such as the shortcomings of legislation and regulation in the field of environmental certification and consulting services, lack of software and others. In spite of this and other Russian specifics EMS can be successfully implemented. Recommendations for Russian companies are developed regarding to initial stage of EMS implementation and consultants selection.
