Text-generating functions of the discourse words dȏ/dȃ in Middle High German

Abstract

Исследование посвящено описанию функционирования дискурсивных маркеров dȏ/dȃ в средневерхненемецком языке на материале героического эпоса «Песнь о нибелунгах» и рыцарского романа «Бедный Генрих». Дискурсивные маркеры как традиционные эпические формулы использовались для создания когезии и когерентности текста и служили сказителю как средство импровизации. Сами дискурсивные маркеры десемантизированы, а вводимые ими значения зачастую следует трактовать в опоре на контекст. Сочетаясь с разными частями речи, они выполняют множество функций.

The graduation thesis is devoted to the functional description of the discourse markers dȏ/dȃ in the Middle High German. The current research was conducted on the epic poem “The Nibelungenlied” and the chivalric romance “Poor Heinrich”. Discourse markers as traditional epic formulas were being used to create cohesion and coherence of the text, and the storyteller regarded them as a media for improvisation in front of the audience. Discourse markers as such are counterwords, consequently, the meanings, which were being presented by using them, should be defined by the context. They correlate to the miscellaneous word classes and fulfil several different functions.
