The evaluative nature of colour names: A semantic analysis of the adjective 'green'

Abstract

Настоящая работа посвящена анализу значения прилагательного green с целью обоснования первостепенной важности его ценностной природы. Проанализированы словарные дефиниции рассматриваемого слова в различных монолингвальных англоязычных словарях, где обнаружен ряд серьезных методологических ошибок. Показана необходимость проанализировать материал языковых корпусов и выявить особенности функционирования рассматриваемого слова в речи, сопоставив их с предлагаемыми в словарях трактовками. На основе этого анализа выведена структура значения прилагательного green.

The work deals with the problem of colour names and their evaluative nature as their most important, primal feature. The example under the analysis is green (adjective). A number of methodological problems have been found during the examination of entries from different monolingual English dictionaries. It has been shown that it is necessary to scrutinize corpuses of the English language to elicit the way the word functions in real texts and to compare the results with the existing dictionary entries. The described analysis helped to discover the structure of meaning of green (adjective).
