Nikolai Gogol's "Diary of a Madman" and Lu Xun's "A Madman's Diary": Madness as a theme and an artistic device

Abstract

Аннотация Повесть Н. В. Гоголя «Записки сумасшедшего» — классическое произведение русской литературы XIX века. Повесть Лу Синя «Дневник сумасшедшего», созданная под влиянием Гоголя в начале XX века, — одно из первых классических произведений новой китайской литературы. Сравнению одноименных повестей посвящены многие работы советских и китайских литературоведов (В. В. Петрова, Е. А. Серебрякова, Чай Сяоянь, Ду Вэй и др.). Однако в научной литературе до сих пор недостаточно внимания уделялось изучению литературных и культурных контекстов, значимых для обоих произведений. Китайский писатель, который обращается к творчеству Гоголя, живет в другой стране, в другой культуре и в другую историческую эпоху. Это влияет на его понимание гоголевского произведения. Основная цель предлагаемого к защите исследования — охарактеризовать особенности восприятия творчества Гоголя в Китае в начале XX века и его влияние на становление новой китайской литературы. Работа состоит из ведения, трёх глав, заключения и библиографии. Первая глава посвящена проблеме восприятия русской литературы и гоголевского творчества в Китае. В ней представлен обзор научной литературы, прослежена и история вопроса и современное состояние его изучения. Во второй главе — «Проблемы изучения повести Гоголя “Записки сумасшедшего”» — гоголевская повесть рассмотрена в контексте русской литературной традиции. В третьей главе — «“Дневник сумасшедшего” Лу Синя в аспекте гоголевского влияния» — представлен сопоставительный анализ двух произведений, охарактеризованы значимые для Лу Синя контексты — китайская литературная традиция и творчество русских модернистов.

Annotation The novella of N. Gogol «Notes of a Madman» is a classic work of nineteenth-century Russian literature. The story of Lu Xun «Diary of a Madman», created under the influence of Gogol at the beginning of the 20th century, is one of the first classical works of new Chinese literature. Many works by Soviet and Chinese literary critics (V. V. Petrova, E. A. Serebryakova, Chai Xiaoyan, Du Wei, etc.) are devoted to the comparison of the same stories. However, in the scientific literature, attention has so far been paid to the study of literary and cultural contexts, significant for both works. The Chinese writer, who refers to Gogol's work, lives in another country, in another culture and in another historical epoch. This affects his understanding of Gogol's work. The main goal of the research proposed for defense is to characterize the peculiarities of Gogol's creativity in China at the beginning of the 20th century and its influence on the formation of new Chinese literature. The work consists of reference, three chapters, conclusion and bibliography. The first chapter is devoted to the problem of perception of Russian literature and Gogol's creativity in China. It provides an overview of the scientific literature, traces the history of the issue and the current state of its study. In the second chapter «Problems of studying the story of Gogol" Notes of a Madman "» Gogol's story is considered in the context of the Russian literary tradition. In the third chapter «"Diary of a Madman" by Lu Xun in the aspect of Gogol's influence» a comparative analysis of two works is presented, the contexts that are significant for Lu Xun – the Chinese literary tradition and the work of Russian modernists – are characterized.
