| ru_RU |
dc.description.abstract | With the emergence of the numerable groups of second generation immigrants, the study of integration processes has reached a crucial stage in Western Europe. It has been recently assumed by the immigration researchers, that the most critical issue of nowadays is the integration of children born in immigrant families. The oldest children of postwar immigrants born on European soil are now entering the job market, which gives us an opportunity to investigate their life orientation and national and ethnic affiliations as grown up and evolved individuals. Much study is done both in the field of ethnic identities and about second-generation immigrants, however, most of the works are concentrated on the causes and effects of immigrant identities on the macro level. This research looks at the micro level of people’s actions and interactions. Current research aims to fill the gap in the study of the subjective processes of the ways of expressing and maintaining ethnic identities of the immigrant descends. The aim of this research is thus to study the variations of ethnic self-identification and the mechanisms of its representation and maintenance among second-generation Turkish and Russian immigrants. To start the discussion, the paper presents the summary of the theoretical ground of the research focused on the key concepts of identity, ethnicity and immigrant generations. The empirical data for this research was collected by the way of semi-structured in-depth interviews with a total of 10 young second-generation Russian and Turkish immigrants aged 20–30 in two German cities: Osnabrück and Bielefeld in 2017. The information derived from the data allowed to structurally examine the construction of the ethnic identity of immigrant descends in various settings. As a result, various types of self-identification, social categorization, and comparison performed by the SGIs were examined, and the mechanisms of negotiation and adaptation of multiple ethnicities to each other were described. | en_GB |
